Gas smell on a dual fuel system? Leave the house, then call PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or 911 from outside (PSE leak steps). Call us once the home is cleared.
Our Sumner team is a short drive up the valley, and Puyallup customers pay the same published visit fees as every other town we serve. The repair itself is priced in writing once the fault is found.

| Part | What you notice |
|---|---|
| Run capacitor | Outdoor unit hums but the compressor or fan will not start |
| Contactor | Outdoor unit never starts, or never shuts off |
| Defrost control or sensor | Ice that stays, or defrost cycles that run too long |
| Reversing valve | Cools fine but will not heat |
| Outdoor fan motor | Compressor runs while the fan sits still |
| Refrigerant leak | Weak heat and icing; we find and fix the leak before charging |
| Heat strips or sequencer | Backup heat does nothing on the coldest mornings |
| Thermostat | Wrong mode or no call for heat; replacement $299 to $1,840 |
More detail on each part is in our heat pump repair cost guide.
Frost on the outdoor coil is normal on damp Puyallup mornings. The heat pump melts it by reversing for a few minutes: the outdoor fan stops, you may see steam, and the air indoors feels cooler until it switches back. That is the system working.
Call us when the ice thickens instead of clearing, when only part of the coil or the copper lines ice over, or when the fan never restarts after a defrost. During a hard freeze, a heat pump runs long cycles and may bring in backup heat; that is expected. Backup heat running all day in mild weather is not.
We repair central heat pumps with an electric air handler, dual fuel systems that pair a heat pump with a gas furnace, and ductless mini-splits of all major brands. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and a Lennox Premier Dealer.
On a dual fuel system, the thermostat or control decides when the furnace takes over from the heat pump. If those changeover settings are wrong, the heat pump can sit idle while the furnace burns gas, or the reverse. We check them on every dual fuel call. For the furnace side, see furnace repair in Puyallup.
ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement when a heat pump is more than 10 years old or needs frequent repairs. The $5,000 rule (the system's age times the repair price) is a quick rule of thumb for when to get a replacement price alongside the repair price. Most parts are routine repairs; a failed compressor on an older system is the usual point to compare.
If your system uses R-22, the EPA allows recycled or previously produced R-22 to service it and does not require replacement, but the refrigerant is scarce and costly (EPA guidance).
If PSE is your electric utility and you replace an out-of-warranty, centrally ducted all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model, PSE pays $1,500 through a Trade Ally contractor such as Home Comfort Alliance, plus a $2,400 Efficiency Boost for income-qualified homes; ductless and dual fuel replacements are excluded (PSE upgrade rebate). PSE natural gas customers adding a ducted heat pump to a gas furnace can qualify for PSE's $1,500 hybrid rebate (PSE hybrid rebate). There is no rebate for a repair, and we handle the paperwork on replacements.
Replacement estimates are free, and our instant HVAC quote gives a range in about 30 seconds. What you get with a replacement: a 3-year Comfort Shield labor warranty on new installations, kept active with yearly maintenance. First-year maintenance is included. See heat pump installation in Puyallup.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather. Standard visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
Inside city limits, replacing a heat pump or furnace needs a City of Puyallup mechanical permit; the Permit Center is at 333 S. Meridian, (253) 864-4165. The City's mechanical fee list also has a line for repairing a heating or cooling unit, so we check with the Permit Center before any repair that changes the system. Much of South Hill, Frederickson and Graham is unincorporated Pierce County, where Pierce County issues the permits. Electrical permits for Puyallup come from Washington L&I, not the City (L&I city electrical permits). We pull the required permits for every installation.

In October a South Hill homeowner booked a heating check on a dual fuel system: a heat pump paired with a 90% gas furnace. On the heat pump side, our technician checked both coils and the condensate drain, took suction and liquid line temperatures, and measured line voltage, DC voltage and fan and compressor amps. On the furnace side, he checked the filter and blower wheel, tested the ignitor's resistance and cleaned the flame sensor.
Everything ran within range. He recommended surge protection for the equipment and a UV light for the coil, and the homeowner chose to join the Home Comfort Club for yearly visits.

We repair heat pumps throughout Puyallup, ZIP codes 98371, 98372, 98373, 98374 and 98375, including South Hill. For all our services here, see Puyallup HVAC, plumbing and electrical, and for the national guide, see heat pump repair.
You pay a $119 dispatch fee for the trip and $72 for a standard diagnostic ($130 if a deeper one is needed), plus a $330 after-hours fee only for qualifying emergencies after hours. The repair price comes in writing before we start. For context, Angi lists Seattle-area heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220 (May 2026); that is not our price.
A defrost cycle blows cooler air for a few minutes. If it lasts, common causes are a thermostat set to cool or fan ON, a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, a failed capacitor, or backup heat that is not coming on.
A thin layer of frost that melts during defrost is normal in damp weather. Thick ice that stays, ice on only part of the coil, or a fan that will not restart points to a defrost, airflow or refrigerant problem.
Yes. Most failures are parts such as capacitors, contactors, defrost controls, fan motors or refrigerant leaks. Our trucks are fully stocked, so most repairs can be handled on the spot.

Replacing a heat pump inside city limits needs a City of Puyallup mechanical permit, and electrical permits come from Washington L&I. The City's fee list includes repairs to heating units, so we check with the Permit Center before any repair that changes the system. Unincorporated areas go through Pierce County. We pull the required permits for every installation.

Multiply the system's age by the repair price. If the result is over about $5,000, it is worth getting a replacement price before you decide. It is a rule of thumb, not a verdict; our written repair price comes first.
