Most homes replace a furnace with one of five systems. The right one depends on whether you have natural gas, your ductwork, whether you also want cooling, and your budget.

Gas furnace, electric furnace or heat pump?
If you have natural gas and only need heat, a new gas furnace is the most direct replacement. If you heat with an electric furnace, a heat pump is usually the better upgrade, because it moves heat instead of making it: the DOE says a heat pump can cut the electricity used for heating by about 75% compared with electric resistance heating such as electric furnaces and baseboard heaters (DOE). What a furnace replacement involves
A furnace replacement is more than swapping a box. Four things decide what the job includes and what it costs:
