Signs your furnace needs repair
Call for furnace repair when the furnace stops heating, heats unevenly, cycles on and off, or makes new noises or smells. The most common warning signs are:
- No heat, or cold air from the vents when the thermostat calls for heat.
- The furnace turns on and off every few minutes (short cycling).
- Banging, squealing, rattling or a loud boom when it lights.

What to check before you call
Five quick checks fix a surprising share of no-heat calls and take about ten minutes. Do only these; leave gas valves, burners and wiring to a technician.
- Thermostat: set to HEAT, a few degrees above room temperature, fan on AUTO; replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
- Power: check the furnace breaker and the light-style switch on or near the furnace.
- Filter: a clogged filter makes the furnace overheat and shut itself off. Replace it (see how often to change a furnace filter).
- Furnace door: the front panel must be fully closed or a safety switch keeps the furnace off.
- Vents: on high-efficiency gas furnaces, make sure the white plastic pipes outside are clear of snow, leaves or nests.

Use the $5,000 rule as a rough guide: multiply the furnace age by the repair cost, and if the result is over $5,000, get a replacement quote too. A cracked heat exchanger on an older furnace is almost always a replace.
Should a 25-year-old furnace be replaced?
Usually, yes. A 25-year-old furnace is well past a typical 15 to 20 year life, is far less efficient than a new model, and parts get harder to find. Repair it if the fix is small and you need heat now, then plan the replacement on your schedule.
Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
A furnace blowing cold air most often has the thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO, a clogged filter that tripped the overheat limit, a failed ignitor or flame sensor, or a gas supply problem. Check the thermostat and filter first; if it still blows cold, call for a diagnosis.
Why does my furnace keep turning off?
Short cycling usually comes from a dirty filter causing overheating, a dirty flame sensor, a blocked vent or intake, or an oversized furnace. Replace the filter first; if it keeps shutting off, a technician should check the flame sensor, limit switch and venting.
