Updated October 2026. Most air-source heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years, and many reach 15 to 20 with yearly maintenance and a good installation (manufacturer estimates from Carrier, Bryant and Lennox, checked October 2026). Ductless mini splits land in a similar range. No government agency publishes a heat pump lifespan, but ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement once a heat pump is more than 10 years old (ENERGY STAR).
Below: lifespan by type, what shortens or stretches it, what our wet, salty Puget Sound climate does to outdoor units, how warranties work, and what to do if yours is getting on in years. For replacement options and rebates, see heat pump replacement.
Heat pump lifespan by type
| Type | Typical life | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ducted air-source heat pump | 10 to 15 years; up to 20 when well maintained | Carrier; Lennox (10 to 15); Bryant (15 to 20 well maintained) |
| Ductless mini split | 12 to 15 years; premium models up to 20 | Bryant |
| Geothermal heat pump (indoor unit) | 20 years or more | Carrier |
Manufacturer estimates, checked October 2026. Your system’s life depends on the factors below.
Do heat pumps last as long as a furnace or AC?
Usually not quite. A heat pump heats in winter and cools in summer, so it runs more hours a year than a furnace or an air conditioner alone. That is why ENERGY STAR suggests looking at replacement after about 10 years for a heat pump or air conditioner, against about 15 years for a furnace or boiler. Here, where we use heat for most of the year and cooling only on hot summer days, the heating season does most of the wearing. For furnaces, see how long does a furnace last.
What shortens or extends a heat pump’s life
Sizing
An oversized heat pump short cycles, turning on and off too often, which wears the compressor. An undersized one runs flat out. We run a room-by-room load calculation (ACCA Manual J) on every installation.
Installation quality and permits
The right refrigerant charge, sealed line sets, a level pad and good drainage matter for decades. The DOE notes that a wrong refrigerant charge reduces performance. We pull the required permits for every installation.
Maintenance
The DOE says a well-maintained heat pump uses 10% to 25% less energy than a severely neglected one (DOE), and ENERGY STAR notes that dirty coils and filters can shorten equipment life.
Climate and siting
Where the outdoor unit sits matters: clear of drips, debris and standing water, with room for air to move.
Equipment quality
Variable-speed and premium models run at lower speeds most of the time, with fewer hard starts, which is part of why manufacturers quote them at the top of the range.
Puget Sound factors: rain, mild winters and salt air
A long, mild heating season
Our winters rarely push a heat pump to its limits, which is easier on it. But the season is long, and damp air in the 30s and 40s means frequent defrost cycles. That is normal; see heat pump frozen or iced up for when it isn’t.
Shoreline homes and salt air
Salt speeds up corrosion on outdoor coils and metal parts. A 2026 EU literature review on heat pumps in island settings suggests treating units within about 1 kilometer of the sea, or where the sea is visible, as at risk of salt exposure, depending on wind, shelter and siting (Clean Energy for EU Islands). If you live on the water in Kitsap County, on an island or along the Sound, site the unit away from direct spray where possible, follow the manufacturer’s coil-care advice, and have the coil looked at during each tune-up.
Moss, leaves and clearance
The DOE advises keeping plants and clutter away from the outdoor unit; Bryant suggests about 2 feet of clearance. Fir needles, maple leaves and moss collect fast here, so check the unit after storms.
How to make your heat pump last longer
- Change or clean filters on the schedule your manufacturer gives (the DOE suggests checking every 3 months at least).
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, moss and snow.
- Avoid deep thermostat setbacks that make backup heat run (DOE).
- Book a yearly tune-up: $230, or $180 for Home Comfort Club members, per piece of equipment. See heat pump maintenance. Current offer: 10% off a heat pump tune-up.
How long is a heat pump warranty?
Manufacturer warranties depend on the brand and on registering the equipment in time. Missing the registration window can cut your coverage.
| Brand | With registration | Register within |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier | 10-year parts, or 5-year parts plus 3-year labor (without registration: 5-year parts) | 90 days |
| Lennox (Elite and Merit heat pumps) | Parts and compressor raised from 5 to 10 years | 60 days |
| Mitsubishi Electric (Diamond Contractor install, single-family home) | 12-year parts and 12-year compressor (standard: 5-year parts, 7-year compressor) | 90 days |

Signs your heat pump is near the end of its life
- It is more than 10 to 15 years old.
- It needs repairs every season.
- Your energy bills keep rising without a change in how you use it.
- Some rooms are too hot or too cold (ENERGY STAR).
- It has become noisy.
- Backup heat does most of the work through the winter.
- It runs on R-22 refrigerant, which hasn’t been produced new since January 1, 2020.

What to do if your heat pump is 10 to 15+ years old
- Get it checked. A repair visit has a $119 dispatch fee and a $72 standard or $130 deeper diagnostic, listed separately. See heat pump repair.
- Price a replacement. Replacement estimates are free. Get a price range in about 30 seconds with our instant quote tool, then a technician confirms the exact price on a free site visit.
- Check rebates. PSE offers $1,500 to replace a centrally ducted, all-electric air-source heat pump that is out of its original manufacturer warranty with a qualifying cold-climate model (ductless not eligible). Tacoma Power offers $1,000 when the new unit is a variable-speed heat pump, unless your home already received a Tacoma Power heat pump incentive. See rebates; we handle the rebate paperwork for you.
Heat pump lifespan FAQ
How long do heat pumps last?
Most air-source heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years, and many reach 15 to 20 with yearly maintenance (manufacturer estimates from Carrier, Bryant and Lennox).
How long do ductless mini splits last?
Bryant puts ductless mini splits at 12 to 15 years, with premium models lasting up to 20.
Can a heat pump last 20 years?
Some do, with a good installation and yearly care. Plan on 10 to 15 years and treat anything beyond that as a bonus.
Do heat pumps wear out faster than furnaces?
They run for both heating and cooling, so they log more hours. ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement after about 10 years for a heat pump and about 15 for a furnace.
Does salt air near Puget Sound shorten heat pump life?
It can speed up corrosion on coils and metal parts on homes near the water. Siting the unit away from spray, following the manufacturer’s coil-care advice and a yearly tune-up help.
Should I replace a 15-year-old heat pump?
It is past the typical range, so get a diagnosis and a free replacement estimate before paying for a major repair. Our repair or replace guide walks through the decision.
How do I make my heat pump last longer?
Change filters on schedule, keep the outdoor unit clear, avoid deep setbacks that trigger backup heat, and book a yearly tune-up.
How long is a heat pump warranty?
It depends on the brand and registration: Carrier up to 10 years parts, Lennox Elite and Merit 10 years parts and compressor, and Mitsubishi Electric 12 years parts and compressor on a Diamond Contractor install in a single-family home, each when registered on time.
Does skipping maintenance shorten a heat pump’s life?
Yes. ENERGY STAR says dirty coils and filters can shorten equipment life, and the DOE puts the energy gap between a well-maintained and a neglected heat pump at 10% to 25%.
What are the signs a heat pump is dying?
Frequent repairs, rising bills, uneven rooms, new noises, backup heat doing most of the work, and R-22 refrigerant on older systems.
Does an older R-410A heat pump have to be replaced?
No. Existing R-410A systems can keep running and be serviced. The newer refrigerants are not drop-in replacements, so a future replacement changes the whole system.
