Getting Your Hose Bibs Ready for Winter
Before the first freeze, disconnect every garden hose, drain the line to each outdoor faucet if it has an indoor shut-off valve, and put an insulated cover on each hose bib. A frost-free hose bib only protects itself when the hose is off: a connected hose traps water in the valve body, and that trapped water is what splits most of them.
Four steps before freezing nights
- Disconnect and drain hoses. Do it before the first night below freezing, and store the hoses inside.
- Close the indoor shut-off, then drain. Many outdoor faucets have a shut-off valve in the crawlspace, basement or garage. Close it, open the outdoor faucet so the line drains, and leave the faucet open for the winter.
- Cover each hose bib. An insulated faucet cover from the hardware store helps most on north-facing and exposed walls.
- Insulate exposed pipes. Pipes that feed the hose bib through a crawlspace or unheated garage freeze first. Foam pipe insulation is an easy fix.
Signs a hose bib froze last winter
- Water sprays or drips from the faucet body, or you hear water inside the wall, the first time you turn it on in spring.
- A damp patch, water stain or musty smell on the inside wall behind the faucet.
- A higher water bill with no other leak you can find.
- Weak flow at the spout.
Frost-free hose bibs often hide freeze damage until they are turned on, because the crack sits inside the wall between the valve and the spout.
