Angi's Seattle estimate (May 2026) is a useful outside yardstick: heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220, with compressor replacements at $900 to $2,900 (Angi Seattle HVAC repair costs). These are Angi's figures, not our price list.

A heat pump delivers steady, mild heat, so the air can feel lukewarm compared with a gas furnace. That alone is not a fault. Steam rising from the outdoor unit during a defrost cycle is normal, and so is thin frost that melts away.
Thick ice that stays on the coil, or ice on the top of the unit, is not normal. Common causes are a failed defrost board or sensor, a stopped outdoor fan or low refrigerant. Leave the ice alone, switch to emergency heat if you have it, and book a repair.
AUX heat is backup heat that helps in cold weather and during defrost; EM heat runs the backup only. AUX running most of a mild day, or a sudden jump in your bill, is worth a diagnostic.
We repair all major brands of ducted and ductless heat pumps in Auburn, including units another company installed. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer and won Gensco's Ductless Excellence award for 2024 to 2025. Typical mini-split repairs are drain line clogs, fan motors, sensors, control boards and refrigerant leaks at the flare connections. See our ductless systems page for more.
Auburn sits partly on the valley floor and partly up on plateaus like Lea Hill and Lakeland Hills. Outdoor units in low, damp spots can collect more frost on cold mornings and run more defrost cycles, while units on open hillsides take more wind. Neither is a problem on its own. A heat pump that cannot keep up in either setting usually has a fault, a dirty coil or low refrigerant, and a diagnostic will show which.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather.
Business-hours visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with same-day service when possible.
Most faults are worth fixing. Replacement deserves a look when the system is old, the repair is large, or it uses R-22: R-22 units can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been made since 2020 (EPA).
If you replace an out-of-warranty, centrally ducted, all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model, PSE's upgrade rebate is $1,500, plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost. Ductless and dual fuel systems are not eligible (PSE upgrade rebate, October 2026). PSE's midstream discount of $300, $400 or $600 can apply at purchase on qualifying equipment. New outdoor units in Auburn also have to meet the City's zoning setbacks, which we plan for on every installation.
We always quote the repair first. For comparison, the instant quote gives a replacement range in about 30 seconds, estimates are free, and our cold-climate heat pump page explains the models PSE favors.
On the King and Pierce County sides of Auburn alike, we pull the required permits for every installation.

In August our technician did a Home Comfort Club maintenance visit on an Auburn dual fuel system: a heat pump paired with a gas furnace.
On the heat pump side he checked the filter, the indoor and outdoor coils, the condensate line and the line set insulation, measured compressor and fan amps and suction pressure, and compared superheat to the manufacturer's data plate. On the furnace side he tested the blower and inducer motors, ignitor, flame sensor, burners and pressure switch ports. The one item he flagged was surge protection: the furnace had none, while the heat pump's surge protector was still active, so he recommended adding one for the furnace.
Our Sumner team repairs heat pumps in Lea Hill, Lakeland Hills, West Hill, Downtown Auburn and North Auburn. We also cover nearby Kent, Federal Way and Sumner.
Every repair visit has a $119 dispatch (trip) fee and a diagnostic of $72 standard or $130 deeper. After-hours visits for qualifying emergencies add a $330 after-hours fee. You get a written price for the repair before any work begins. Angi's Seattle-area estimate is $220 to $2,220 (May 2026), which is a benchmark, not our price.
A heat pump tune-up is $230 per piece of equipment, or $180 for Home Comfort Club members.
Lukewarm air is normal for a heat pump. Cold air for long periods can come from a defrost cycle, the thermostat setting, a reversing valve or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call us.
Steam and thin frost during defrost are normal. Ice that stays, or a solid block on the coil, points to a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip it off; use emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
Aux heat is backup heat that helps in cold weather or during defrost. EM heat runs only the backup. If AUX is on most of a mild day, or your bill jumps, have the system checked.
Low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty filter or coil, a failing outdoor fan or a system too small for the house are the usual causes. A diagnostic tells which one.
Same-day service when possible. Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7; heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies, such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather ($330 after-hours fee).
Yes. Our Sumner team serves all of Auburn, including Lea Hill, Lakeland Hills, West Hill, Downtown Auburn and North Auburn.
Yes, all major brands, ducted and ductless. We are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and Lennox Premier Dealer.
That depends on the repair, the system's age and its refrigerant. R-22 systems can still be serviced, though no new R-22 has been made since 2020. We price the repair and tell you if replacement makes more sense; replacement estimates are free.
Part-only repairs need no permit. Replacing a heat pump needs a City of Auburn mechanical permit and an L&I electrical permit, and new outdoor units must meet the City's setback rules; we pull the required permits for every installation.
No. PSE has no repair or maintenance rebate. Replacing an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model can earn $1,500 plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost (pse.com, October 2026).
