Determining the best type of system for your home depends on geographical location, the size and physical characteristics of your home, and the way the system will be used.

HVAC System Types

Split Systems

A split system is the most common type of heating and cooling. The furnace, which is indoors, is used as the heat source, while the air conditioning unit is outdoors and functions to cool the home. This type of system consistently and reliably heats and cools your entire home, as well as maintains indoor air quality through the use of filters inside the furnace.

Hybrid Systems

A hybrid system that includes a heat pump provides both heating and cooling with greater efficiency. This system is typically paired with either a gas furnace or an electric air handler.

A heat pump operates like an air conditioner when cooling your home by transferring heat from inside to the outdoors. However, it also features a reversing valve that enables it to absorb heat energy from the outside air, even in cold temperatures, and bring it indoors. This assists in heating the home as well.

When the weather turns extremely cold, the gas furnace becomes the primary heat source to ensure maximum comfort. Overall, this solution helps save both energy and fuel.

Ductless Systems

Ductless systems enable you to heat and/or cool your home without invasive ductwork. They also operate quietly, have a compact design, and require minimal installation. Both Heat Pump and A/C solutions are flexible, whether you’re looking to maintain comfort in one room or multiple rooms.
Are you suffering from a hot or cold spot in your home?
Are you renovating your home?
Do you want air conditioning but can’t add duct work?
Ductless systems provide heating and cooling to specific areas within a home. Their installation is less invasive and often more cost-effective since they do not require ductwork to distribute air.

A ductless system consists of an outdoor unit connected to a compact, wall-mounted unit inside the home through a small hole. Each indoor unit is designed to deliver warm or cool air exclusively to the room where it is installed. These indoor units can be mounted on walls, ceilings, or floors.

Ductless systems can be utilized for just one or two rooms, but they can also be expanded to create up to eight separate climate zones throughout your home.
These versatile systems provide targeted comfort in the indoor spaces where they are installed. They also function as a zoning system by allowing individual temperature control in each separate room.

For instance, if you prefer a cooler home office but a warmer bedroom, you can install a ductless unit in each room. This setup enables you to set different temperatures in each area according to your comfort needs. A wireless remote makes adjustments even easier.

Not only are these units generally very energy efficient, but they also offer a more precise level of control compared to traditional duct-based systems.

Heating and cooling systems come in Single-Stage, Two-Stage, and Multi-Stage options representing the levels at which they operate.

A Single stage unit means its operating speed is either on or off.
A Two-stage unit means it operates on either high or low. The low setting is adequate to meet most household comfort demands about 80% of the time, providing even temperatures. On hotter days, it can leverage the high level of operation to maintain comfort levels. Two stage systems are typically quieter and more efficient than a single stage unit.
A Multi-stage unit has a range of operation and therefore the most precise temperature control and best comfort. These variable speed units are the quietest and offer the most energy savings.

With an HVAC system, one size does not fit all. It is important to consider:

Cooling & Heating Capacity
Energy Efficiency
Air Quality
Humidity Regulation
Installation Requirements Unique to Your Home

Your Comfort Consultant will explain what these terms mean and help you identify which equipment will best suit your needs.

The Technicians Matthew Willard and Michael Moore did a great job. They were very professional and fast. I had my old gas furnace replaced and an air conditioning unit installed. Everything looks great. 4 days later and the AC is keeping the house nice and cool. The electrical installation looks good too but I didn’t get to meet the electrical technicians because I left for work. I think that their names were Armando and Justin. Thank you, home comfort.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can't say enough good things about Home Comfort Alliance and, in particular, Kelly Robblee and Michael Hanson. Home Comfort Alliance installed a new furnace in our home in late 2024/early 2025. This May, we discovered that our electric sauna no longer had power. Because we rarely use it, we hadn't noticed the problem sooner. I contacted Home Comfort Alliance thinking the sauna circuit may have been disconnected during the electrical work associated with the furnace installation. I honestly wasn't sure what kind of response I'd get given how much time had passed, but they took my concern seriously and sent Kelly and Michael to investigate. They quickly traced the problem and discovered that Home Comfort Alliance hadn't caused it at all. A completely different contractor who installed our electric car charger had taken the power from the sauna circuit. Here's the part that really impressed me: even after determining that it wasn't their responsibility, Kelly and Michael offered to fix the problem for us anyway. That is exceptional customer service. They were professional, knowledgeable and thorough, and there was never any attempt to brush off our concern or pass the problem along once they discovered someone else had caused it. It's easy to give a company five stars when everything goes perfectly. I think you learn much more about a company by seeing how they respond when a customer comes to them with a problem. Kelly, Michael and Home Comfort Alliance exceeded my expectations. This is exactly the kind of company you want to do business with, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I’ve had heating and cooling maintenance done by this company ever since my system was installed, and I want to give special recognition to the technician, Torfin (Tor). He really knows his stuff and was much more thorough than the other technicians who have serviced the system. Tor found a part that was starting to fail just before my warranty was set to expire. I only wish he had been sent out sooner, because the issue could have been discovered and fixed earlier. Thankfully, the company was able to honor the warranty for both parts and labor. Thanks to Tor for being so thorough and knowledgeable!

How to Choose the Best Heating and Cooling System

The best HVAC system is not the same for every home. These are some of the biggest factors to consider when comparing your options.

Home Layout & Ductwork

Your home’s size, floor plan, insulation, and existing ductwork all affect which HVAC system types make the most sense.

Comfort Goals

Some homeowners want lower energy bills, while others want better cooling, improved airflow, or fewer hot and cold spots throughout the house.

Budget & Long-Term Value

Upfront price matters, but so do financing, rebates, maintenance needs, and long-term operating efficiency over time.

System comparison

HVAC System Options for Western Washington Homes

These common comparisons can help homeowners narrow down the best fit for their space and comfort priorities.

Heat Pump vs Furnace

Heat pumps provide heating and cooling in one system, while furnaces focus on heat and usually pair with a separate AC. The best choice depends on efficiency goals, home setup, and preferred system design.

Ductless vs Central Air

Central systems are ideal for whole-home ducted comfort, while ductless mini-splits work especially well in homes without ductwork or in areas where zoned control matters.

Hybrid Systems for Added Flexibility

Hybrid systems combine the efficiency of a heat pump with the backup strength of a furnace, giving many homeowners a flexible comfort strategy for changing conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions About HVAC Systems

Answers to common questions homeowners ask when comparing heating and cooling system types.

What HVAC system type is best for homes in Western Washington?

The best HVAC system depends on your home’s size, layout, ductwork, comfort goals, budget, and energy priorities. Many homeowners compare furnaces, heat pumps, hybrid systems, and ductless mini-splits before deciding what fits best.

What is the difference between a heat pump and a furnace?

A furnace generates heat and is often paired with a separate air conditioner for cooling. A heat pump both heats and cools, making it a versatile all-in-one option for many homes.

Are ductless mini-splits a good option for homes without ductwork?

Yes. Ductless mini-splits are often an excellent fit for homes without ducts, additions, finished basements, garages, upstairs spaces, and rooms with persistent hot or cold spots.

What is a hybrid or dual-fuel system?

A hybrid system combines a heat pump with a furnace. This setup can give homeowners efficient operation during milder weather while still offering furnace support during colder periods.

Can Home Comfort Alliance help me compare costs, rebates, and financing?

Yes. We help homeowners compare HVAC system types based on layout, comfort concerns, budget, energy efficiency goals, financing options, and available rebates or tax credits.
