Permits, Inspection & Electrical Requirements

Tacoma Power manages local electrical permitting and inspection and directs applicants through the City of Tacoma’s Accela permitting system. Charger installations involving new electrical work should be planned around applicable permit and inspection requirements before work begins.

Tacoma Power states that, as of June 1, 2026, it adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code together with applicable Tacoma and Washington requirements.

As of August 2026, Tacoma Power lists residential EV charging bill credits of up to $400 for qualifying Level 2 charger purchases, smart splitters, qualifying installation electrical work, or a qualifying 240-volt EV charging outlet, with a maximum $600 bill credit when more than one eligible measure is combined.

Eligibility, equipment specifications, documentation requirements, and program availability apply and can change. Tacoma Power currently requires eligible equipment to be purchased and installed before the incentive application is submitted.

Do I need an electrician to install a Level 2 EV charger?

If the project requires a new 240-volt circuit, hardwired charging equipment or other electrical work, it should be handled as permitted electrical work by a qualified electrical contractor. Tacoma Power specifically advises homeowners who need a new Level 2 connection to hire an electrician and check applicable permit requirements.

Do I need an electrical permit for an EV charger in Tacoma?

Tacoma Power manages electrical permitting and inspections through the City of Tacoma permitting system. The exact requirement depends on the work being performed, so the installation should be reviewed for applicable permitting before electrical work begins. Can my current electrical panel handle a Level 2 charger?

Do I automatically need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Can an EV charger be installed outside?

Can an EV charger be installed in a detached garage?

Does Tacoma Power offer an EV charger rebate?

  The Technicians Matthew Willard and Michael Moore did a great job. They were very professional and fast. I had my old gas furnace replaced and an air conditioning unit installed. Everything looks great. 4 days later and the AC is keeping the house nice and cool.   ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can't say enough good things about Home Comfort Alliance and, in particular, Kelly Robblee and Michael Hanson. Home Comfort Alliance installed a new furnace in our home in late 2024/early 2025. This May, we discovered that our electric sauna no longer had power. Because we rarely use it, we hadn't noticed the problem sooner. I contacted Home Comfort Alliance thinking the sauna circuit may have been disconnected during the electrical work associated with the furnace installation. I honestly wasn't sure what kind of response I'd get given how much time had passed, but they took my concern seriously and sent Kelly and Michael to investigate. They quickly traced the problem and discovered that Home Comfort Alliance hadn't caused it at all. A completely different contractor who installed our electric car charger had taken the power from the sauna circuit. Here's the part that really impressed me: even after determining that it wasn't their responsibility, Kelly and Michael offered to fix the problem for us anyway. That is exceptional customer service. They were professional, knowledgeable and thorough, and there was never any attempt to brush off our concern or pass the problem along once they discovered someone else had caused it. It's easy to give a company five stars when everything goes perfectly. I think you learn much more about a company by seeing how they respond when a customer comes to them with a problem. Kelly, Michael and Home Comfort Alliance exceeded my expectations. This is exactly the kind of company you want to do business with, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
