What Does a Level 2 EV Charger Need?

Level 2 charging uses 208/240-volt power and normally requires a dedicated electrical circuit sized for the charger and its charging load.
Enough Electrical Capacity
Breaker space alone does not determine whether a charger can be added. The electrical load, service capacity, and existing household demand should also be evaluated.

Cord reach, parking direction, distance from the panel, wall construction and indoor or outdoor exposure can all affect the installation plan.

Not every EV charger project requires a new electrical panel. The first step is determining how the proposed charger fits into your home’s existing electrical load and available capacity.
An electrician may review the service size, breaker configuration, existing loads, proposed charger amperage and other electrical conditions before determining the appropriate solution.

What Tacoma Homeowners Should Consider Before Installation
Permits, Inspection & Electrical Requirements
Tacoma Power manages local electrical permitting and inspection and directs applicants through the City of Tacoma’s Accela permitting system. Charger installations involving new electrical work should be planned around applicable permit and inspection requirements before work begins.
Tacoma Power states that, as of June 1, 2026, it adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code together with applicable Tacoma and Washington requirements.

Tacoma Homes & Parking Layouts
Tacoma homes do not all present the same installation conditions. A home in the North End, Proctor, Stadium District or Old Town can have a very different panel location and parking layout than a newer or remodeled property elsewhere in Tacoma.
Attached garages may allow a relatively direct wiring route, while a detached garage, driveway, carport or exterior parking space may require a longer conductor run, additional routing or other installation work.
For outdoor locations, the charger and electrical installation should be appropriate for the environment and exposure where the equipment will be installed.
Tacoma Power EV Charging Incentives
As of August 2026, Tacoma Power lists residential EV charging bill credits of up to $400 for qualifying Level 2 charger purchases, smart splitters, qualifying installation electrical work, or a qualifying 240-volt EV charging outlet, with a maximum $600 bill credit when more than one eligible measure is combined.
Eligibility, equipment specifications, documentation requirements, and program availability apply and can change. Tacoma Power currently requires eligible equipment to be purchased and installed before the incentive application is submitted.
