Backup Power Planning

Prepare Your Tacoma Home for an Unexpected Power Outage

Tacoma Power notes that outages can occur because of storms and other unexpected events. Strong winds and tree branches can also damage residential electrical equipment and power infrastructure, making outage planning a practical consideration for homeowners who depend on electricity for heat, refrigeration, communications and other household systems.

A permanently installed standby generator does not prevent an outage. Instead, it provides an independent source of backup electricity when properly configured for the loads you want to keep operating.

Choose Your Backup Priorities

Whole-Home Backup or Essential-Circuit Protection?

A standby generator does not automatically need to power every electrical load in the house. Some Tacoma homeowners prioritize a carefully selected group of essential circuits, while others want broader whole-home coverage. Deciding what matters most during an outage is one of the first steps in designing the system.

Essential-Load Backup

An essentials-focused system is designed around selected circuits or equipment you consider most important during an outage. That might include heating, refrigeration, internet, lighting, sump pumps, medical equipment or selected receptacles.

Prioritizing loads can reduce the generator capacity required while still providing meaningful outage protection.

Whole-Home Backup

Whole-home designs provide capacity for more of the electrical system and can reduce the need to decide which circuits are available during an outage. The appropriate generator still needs to be matched to the home’s expected electrical demand.

Larger backup coverage may also affect generator size, fuel requirements, transfer equipment and the overall installation scope.

Generator Capacity

Why Professional Generator Sizing Matters

Generator capacity should be based on the electrical loads the system is expected to support, not simply the square footage of the house. Motors, HVAC equipment and other appliances may also have starting demands that differ from their normal operating load.

HCA evaluates the home’s electrical load and the systems you want backed up before recommending generator capacity. That helps avoid paying for substantially more generator than you need while reducing the risk of designing a system that cannot support your intended loads.

Automatic Backup Power

How an Automatic Standby Generator Works

A standby generator is permanently installed outside the home and integrated with the electrical system through transfer equipment. When utility power is lost, an automatic transfer switch allows the backup system to respond without requiring the homeowner to roll out portable equipment, connect extension cords or manually feed electricity into the house.

1

Utility Power Is Interrupted

The system recognizes that normal utility power is unavailable.

2

Generator Starts

The permanently installed generator starts automatically using its configured fuel supply.

3

Backup Loads Receive Power

The transfer equipment connects the selected home loads to generator power.

4

Utility Power Returns

The system transfers the home back to normal utility service and returns the generator to standby operation.

Installation Planning

What to Expect From Standby Generator Installation

A standby generator project involves electrical design, equipment selection, fuel planning, outdoor placement and permitting. HCA’s current generator process includes sizing, electrical and fuel connections, permitting, system startup and load testing.

01

Backup-Power Assessment

Discuss which systems and circuits you want available during an outage.

02

Electrical Load & Panel Review

Evaluate expected backup loads, electrical service and panel configuration.

03

Generator & Fuel Planning

Select appropriate generator capacity and determine whether natural gas or propane is the practical fuel source.

04

Placement & Permit Planning

Plan the outdoor equipment location, required clearances, electrical routing, fuel connection and applicable permits.

05

Professional Installation

Install the generator, transfer equipment, electrical connections and required fuel components.

06

Startup & Load Testing

Start and test the system to verify generator operation and backup-load performance.

07

Homeowner Walkthrough

Review basic operation, maintenance expectations and what to know when an outage occurs.

Electrical System Readiness

Does Your Electrical Panel Need an Upgrade?

A standby generator must integrate correctly with the home’s existing electrical system. The panel, service configuration, transfer equipment and the circuits being backed up all need to be considered before installation.

An electrical-panel upgrade is not automatically required for every generator project. If the existing equipment or configuration needs changes to support the planned installation, HCA can explain those requirements and incorporate the related electrical work into the project scope.

Project Budget

What Affects Standby Generator Installation Cost in Tacoma?

Generator installation cost depends on much more than the generator itself. Two Tacoma homes can require very different projects depending on the desired backup loads, electrical configuration, fuel source, equipment location and amount of supporting work.

HCA currently offers free generator estimates, making an in-home assessment the more useful way to establish an accurate project budget than relying on a broad online price range.

Request a Free Generator Estimate

Common Cost Factors

  • Generator capacity
  • Whole-home versus essential-load coverage
  • Automatic transfer equipment
  • Existing electrical panel and service configuration
  • Natural-gas or propane requirements
  • Fuel piping or related modifications
  • Generator placement and site preparation
  • Distance between equipment and connection points
  • Electrical wiring and routing
  • Permits and inspections
  • Property-specific installation complexity
Code & Permit Planning

Tacoma Generator Permits & Electrical Inspections

A permanently installed standby generator is part of the home’s electrical system, and permitting is an important part of completing the project correctly. Tacoma Power states that electrical work within its service area requires an electrical permit and inspection.

Home Comfort Alliance’s generator program states that electrical and fuel permits are required and that HCA handles permitting, utility coordination, placement clearances and final inspection coordination as part of the installation package.

Fuel & Placement Requirements

Generator fuel connections and outdoor placement introduce additional code and clearance considerations that should be resolved as part of the project design rather than after equipment is ordered.

Final Inspection

Required inspections help verify that permitted electrical work has been completed according to the approved installation and applicable requirements.

Standby Generator Installation Across Tacoma & Nearby Communities

Home Comfort Alliance serves homeowners across Tacoma, including North End, Proctor District, Stadium District, Old Town, Central Tacoma, South Tacoma, Eastside, West End, Point Ruston, Browns Point, and Northeast Tacoma.

Tacoma homes also vary considerably in age and electrical configuration. An established property with an older panel or previous electrical modifications may require different generator integration than a newer home with updated service equipment, which is why generator planning should begin with the actual property.

HCA also serves nearby South Sound communities including University Place, Fircrest, Fife, Lakewood and Gig Harbor. Service availability can vary by project and location, so homeowners can confirm coverage when scheduling an estimate.

Complete Electrical Support

Generator installation may uncover related electrical needs or create opportunities to improve how your home handles power. Explore HCA’s related services when your project includes panel work, electrical safety improvements, surge protection or ongoing generator support.

The Technicians Matthew Willard and Michael Moore did a great job. They were very professional and fast. I had my old gas furnace replaced and an air conditioning unit installed. Everything looks great. 4 days later and the AC is keeping the house nice and cool. The electrical installation looks good too but I didn’t get to meet the electrical technicians because I left for work. I think that their names were Armando and Justin. Thank you, home comfort.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can't say enough good things about Home Comfort Alliance and, in particular, Kelly Robblee and Michael Hanson. Home Comfort Alliance installed a new furnace in our home in late 2024/early 2025. This May, we discovered that our electric sauna no longer had power. Because we rarely use it, we hadn't noticed the problem sooner. I contacted Home Comfort Alliance thinking the sauna circuit may have been disconnected during the electrical work associated with the furnace installation. I honestly wasn't sure what kind of response I'd get given how much time had passed, but they took my concern seriously and sent Kelly and Michael to investigate. They quickly traced the problem and discovered that Home Comfort Alliance hadn't caused it at all. A completely different contractor who installed our electric car charger had taken the power from the sauna circuit. Here's the part that really impressed me: even after determining that it wasn't their responsibility, Kelly and Michael offered to fix the problem for us anyway. That is exceptional customer service. They were professional, knowledgeable and thorough, and there was never any attempt to brush off our concern or pass the problem along once they discovered someone else had caused it. It's easy to give a company five stars when everything goes perfectly. I think you learn much more about a company by seeing how they respond when a customer comes to them with a problem. Kelly, Michael and Home Comfort Alliance exceeded my expectations. This is exactly the kind of company you want to do business with, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I’ve had heating and cooling maintenance done by this company ever since my system was installed, and I want to give special recognition to the technician, Torfin (Tor). He really knows his stuff and was much more thorough than the other technicians who have serviced the system. Tor found a part that was starting to fail just before my warranty was set to expire. I only wish he had been sent out sooner, because the issue could have been discovered and fixed earlier. Thankfully, the company was able to honor the warranty for both parts and labor. Thanks to Tor for being so thorough and knowledgeable!

Homeowner Questions

Tacoma Standby Generator Installation FAQs

Answers to common questions about generator capacity, transfer switches, fuel options, installation cost, permits, panel upgrades and ongoing maintenance.

How much does standby generator installation cost in Tacoma?
Generator installation cost depends on generator capacity, whole-home versus essential-load coverage, transfer equipment, the existing electrical panel, fuel source, fuel-line requirements, equipment placement, wiring distance, site preparation, permits and overall installation complexity. HCA currently offers free generator estimates so the project can be priced around the actual property.
What size standby generator do I need for my Tacoma home?
The correct generator size depends on what you want to power during an outage and the electrical demand of those loads. Heating and cooling equipment, pumps, refrigerators and other motor-driven equipment can also have starting requirements that matter when sizing the system. HCA evaluates the home’s load and backup priorities before recommending generator capacity.
Can a standby generator power my entire house?
It can when the generator and transfer system are designed for the home’s expected electrical demand. HCA also offers essentials-only configurations for homeowners who prefer to back up selected circuits rather than the entire home.
What is an automatic transfer switch?
An automatic transfer switch is the equipment that allows a properly configured standby system to transfer selected electrical loads away from utility power and onto generator power when an outage occurs, then return the home to utility power after service is restored.
Does a standby generator start automatically during an outage?
Yes, when installed as an automatic standby system with compatible transfer equipment. HCA’s current generator systems are designed to detect a loss of utility power and provide automatic backup electricity without requiring portable-generator setup.
Do standby generators use natural gas or propane?
Home Comfort Alliance installs both natural-gas and propane standby-generator systems. The appropriate option depends on the fuel available at your home, generator requirements, project configuration and property-specific considerations.
Do I need a permit to install a standby generator in Tacoma?

Yes, permitting is part of a permanent generator installation. Tacoma Power requires electrical permits and inspections for electrical work within its service area, and HCA states that generator projects require electrical and fuel permits. HCA coordinates permitting and inspections as part of its generator installation process.

Will I need to upgrade my electrical panel for a generator?
Not every generator installation requires a panel replacement. The existing panel, service configuration, available equipment space, transfer-switch design and intended backup loads should be evaluated first. If electrical upgrades are needed, HCA can incorporate that work into the project plan.
Where can a standby generator be installed?
Standby generators are permanently installed outside the home. The exact location depends on property layout, manufacturer requirements, required clearances, access, fuel availability, electrical routing and local code considerations. Site placement should therefore be evaluated before equipment is ordered.
How long does standby generator installation take?
The project schedule varies according to generator availability, permit requirements, electrical work, fuel work, site preparation and inspection scheduling. A straightforward installation and a project that also requires a panel upgrade or extensive fuel work can have different timelines. HCA can provide a project-specific schedule after the installation scope is established.
Does a standby generator require maintenance?
Yes. HCA recommends annual generator maintenance, or more frequent service when a generator sees substantial use. Its generator maintenance program includes items such as oil and filter service, diagnostics and load testing to help keep the system ready for an outage.
Are there current Home Comfort Alliance generator specials?

Home Comfort Alliance currently advertises savings of up to $1,000 on residential generator installation. Promotions and eligibility requirements can change, so review HCA’s current offers before scheduling your project.

Does Home Comfort Alliance serve my Tacoma neighborhood?
HCA serves neighborhoods throughout Tacoma, including North End, Proctor District, Stadium District, Old Town, Central Tacoma, South Tacoma, Eastside, West End, Point Ruston, Browns Point and Northeast Tacoma. Nearby service areas include University Place, Fife, Fircrest, Lakewood and Gig Harbor.
