The purchase price is only half the comparison. A gas furnace turns 80 to 98 percent of the gas it burns into heat, depending on its efficiency rating. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so on a typical mild Puget Sound winter day it delivers several units of heat for each unit of electricity. Which costs less to run in your house depends on current PSE gas and PUD electric rates, your insulation and how you set the thermostat.
