Furnace or heat pump: running costs
The purchase price is only half the comparison. A gas furnace turns 80 to 98 percent of the gas it burns into heat, depending on its efficiency rating. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so on a typical mild Puget Sound winter day it delivers several units of heat for each unit of electricity. Which costs less to run in your house depends on current PSE gas and PUD electric rates, your insulation and how you set the thermostat. During the estimate we calculate an annual running cost for each option using your home’s heat loss, so you can weigh install price, rebates and yearly bills together. Many gas homes land on dual fuel: the heat pump carries most of the season and the furnace handles the coldest hours.
Signs your furnace should be replaced
- It is 15 or more years old and the latest repair estimate is large.
- The same parts keep failing: igniters, inducer motors, pressure switches, control boards.
- Rooms at the far end of the house stay cold even after duct fixes.
- Heating bills rise year after year with similar weather.
- You hear booming at start-up or see soot around the burners or flue.
- A technician has found a cracked heat exchanger, which is a carbon monoxide risk and means replacement.
Sizing, venting and ductwork
We size the new furnace from a heat-loss calculation, not the old nameplate. Windows, insulation and additions change what a house needs, and an oversized furnace short-cycles, wears out faster and leaves rooms uneven. A static pressure test tells us whether the ducts can deliver the airflow the new unit needs; when they can’t, a bigger return or sealed duct joints often do more for comfort than any furnace upgrade, and we price that as an optional line.
Venting is planned before install day. A 95% condensing furnace vents cool exhaust through PVC and needs a drain for condensate; an 80% furnace uses a metal flue. If an old furnace shared a chimney with a gas water heater, switching to a condensing furnace can leave the water heater alone in an oversized flue, which we check and correct.
