Common heating problems we fix

Airflow and ductwork
Many “my furnace isn’t working” complaints turn out to be airflow problems. A filter left in too long, a return grille blocked by furniture, a crushed flex duct in the crawlspace or attic, or a supply run that came loose years ago can starve the system and make one end of the house cold. Low airflow also makes a furnace overheat and shut down on its safety limit, and makes a heat pump work harder than it should. Thermostats and heat pump settings
The thermostat is the brain of the system, and the wrong settings cost money every day. On heat pumps, an older or incorrectly configured thermostat often brings on electric backup heat whenever the setpoint is raised a couple of degrees, which can make a heat pump cost nearly as much to run as baseboards. Maintenance that prevents most breakdowns
A yearly fall service catches the parts that fail most often before the first cold week. On a gas furnace we clean and test the burners, flame sensor and igniter, inspect the heat exchanger and venting, measure gas pressure and temperature rise, test safety switches, clear the condensate drain and change the filter. On a heat pump we check refrigerant pressures, clean the outdoor coil, test defrost and backup heat, and tighten electrical connections. Why does my heat pump run constantly in cold weather?
Heat pumps are designed to run long, steady cycles, so long run times alone aren’t a problem. If the house isn’t keeping up, or backup heat is running often, the cause may be low refrigerant, a dirty coil, a defrost fault or thermostat settings; we test each.
Is it safe to run my furnace with a dirty filter?
