Ducted or ductless: the trade-offs
Both are heat pumps; the difference is how the heated or cooled air reaches the rooms.
- Ducted systems hide everything but the vents and a thermostat. They suit homes with ductwork in reasonable shape, and one system covers the whole house. The catch is that leaky or undersized ducts cap how well any ducted system can perform.
- Ductless mini splits put a slim head on the wall or ceiling of each zone. Every zone has its own temperature, there is no duct loss, and install is quick in homes that never had ducts. The heads are visible, and each zone needs its own filter rinse.
- Mixed systems are common too: a ducted heat pump for the main floor and a ductless head for a bonus room over the garage.

Rebates for Port Orchard heat pumps

Cold mornings and backup heat
Modern cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing, so the question is not whether a heat pump works in Kitsap County winters but how the backup is set up. In a ducted system, electric strips or a gas furnace take over only when the outdoor unit can’t keep up. We set the switch-over point and lockouts at start-up so backup heat runs as little as possible, which is where most of the savings come from.
Outdoor units also defrost themselves on damp, cold days. You may see a short puff of steam and hear the fan stop; that is normal. We place the outdoor unit on a pad or stand clear of roof drip lines and set the condensate to drain away from walkways.
What happens on install day

- Permits. Plan on a filter check every one to three months, clearing leaves and moss from around the outdoor unit, and a professional service visit once a year. Ductless heads need their washable filters rinsed every few weeks in heavy-use months.
