Matching the system to the home
- Condos and apartments near the marina: ductless, with one or two indoor heads replacing the wall heaters.
- Ramblers with baseboards: a multi-zone ductless system, or a small ducted system if there is room for ducts in the crawlspace or attic.
- Houses with a gas furnace: either a ducted heat pump with electric backup, or a heat pump added to a newer furnace for dual fuel.

How heat pumps handle Des Moines winters

Near the water
Salt air and wind are the two things that shorten a heat pump’s life on the bluff. We pick a location with some shelter, raise the unit off the ground, and recommend a yearly coil cleaning and connection check. For homes right on the water, we can talk about coated coils.
Between visits, keep shrubs, planters and deck furniture a couple of feet back from the unit, hose off salt and leaves gently in spring, and make sure the drain under it is clear so defrost water can get away.
Wiring and permits
Each heat pump needs its own circuit and an outdoor disconnect, and older homes may need a panel or service upgrade. The City of Des Moines issues both the mechanical and electrical permits through MyPermits Online (City of Des Moines, permit applications and information) and inspects electrical work itself instead of L&I (L&I, cities that do their own electrical permits). Sizing and installation day
An oversized heat pump short-cycles and leaves rooms clammy; an undersized one leans on backup heat. Installation usually takes one to two days for a ducted system and one to three for ductless, depending on the number of heads. The crew starts the system, checks the charge and airflow, sets up the thermostat and shows you how to use it, then we book inspections and file your rebate.
Placement on tight lots and condos
On narrow lots and in condo buildings, placement decides noise and appearance. We keep units away from bedroom windows where we can, leave room for airflow and service, and use wall brackets or roof stands where there is no ground space. If an HOA governs your home, get its approval for the location first.
Heat pump water heaters
Hot water can run on the same principle. Swapping an electric tank in the garage for a heat pump water heater cuts its electricity use sharply, and PSE contributes $1,000, or $1,100 through Efficiency Boost (PSE heat pump water heater rebate). Our Des Moines plumbers install them.
Repairs and yearly service

Often, yes. Ductless systems are the usual choice. The outdoor unit needs a spot the HOA approves, such as a balcony, roof or wall bracket, and we give you a written proposal to take to the board.

Do I need a new electrical panel?
