Three water districts, three sewer districts
Most cities have one water utility. Des Moines has several: Highline Water District, Lakehaven and Water District 54 supply water, and Midway, Southwest Suburban and Lakehaven handle sewer, depending on where you live (City of Des Moines, Community Services Directory). It matters when something goes wrong. The district owns the main and the meter; the pipe from the meter to your house, the side sewer to the street and everything inside are yours.
If water is surfacing in the yard, a meter is spinning with everything off, or several neighbors have backups at once, call your district as well as us. If it is only your house, it is almost always on your side, and that is our job.
Hillside homes and drainage
A lot of Des Moines is built on slopes that drop toward the Sound. Rain that runs downhill finds foundations, crawlspaces and daylight basements, so sump pumps, footing drains and floor drains matter more here than in flat neighborhoods. We replace failed sump pumps, add check valves and alarms, and clear floor drains that have silted up. Hidden leaks
Not every leak drips where you can see it. Signs of a hidden one include a water bill that jumps without a reason, a meter that moves with every fixture off, warm spots on a slab floor, a musty smell in a closet, or paint that bubbles on a wall. We test fixtures first, then isolate sections of pipe until we find the source, so we open only the wall or floor we need to.
Fixtures and remodels
We replace faucets, sinks, toilets, vanities and shower valves, add laundry and utility sinks, and move supply and drain lines when a kitchen or bath remodel changes the layout. On a larger remodel, a written plumbing number early on makes the rest of the budget easier to plan.
