Burning smell or sparks at the outdoor unit? Switch the heat pump off at the thermostat and at its breaker, keep clear of the unit, and call us. If you also have a gas furnace and smell gas, leave the home and call PSE at 1-888-225-5773 from outside.
Woodinville winters are long, damp and mostly mild, with a few hard cold snaps. That is the weather heat pumps handle best, until a part fails. These are the problems we see most:
| What you notice | Common causes we check |
|---|---|
| Lukewarm or cool air on HEAT | Low refrigerant from a leak, reversing valve, thermostat settings, defrost timing |
| Ice that will not clear | Defrost control board or sensor, outdoor fan motor, low charge |
| Outdoor unit hums, will not start | Run capacitor, contactor, compressor or fan motor |
| Backup heat runs constantly | Outdoor unit not running, staging settings, low charge |
| Ductless head leaking or flashing | Blocked condensate drain, dirty coil, sensor or board fault |
We repair ducted systems, ductless mini-splits and dual fuel systems where a gas furnace backs up the heat pump. We are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and a Lennox Premier Dealer, and we service all major brands, including systems we did not install.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as no heat in cold weather, a heat pump that has stopped heating, or a burning or electrical smell.
Weekday visits (Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM) are billed at regular rates, with same-day service when possible. If the heat pump quits at night and you have emergency heat on the thermostat, use it until we arrive. More in our emergency heat pump repair guide.

Once a year is the right rhythm for a heat pump in this climate, ideally before the first cold snap. A tune-up is $230 per piece of equipment, or $180 for Home Comfort Club members. Our technicians clean and inspect the coils and filters, check refrigerant pressures and electrical connections, confirm the defrost cycle works, and clear the condensate drain. See heat pump maintenance for the details, and the Home Comfort Club for member pricing from $15 a month.
A heat pump with one failed part and a clean service history is usually worth repairing, unless the compressor or coil has failed. Older systems on R-22 refrigerant can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been produced or imported since 2020, so recharges cost more each year (EPA).
If replacement makes sense, Woodinville homes on PSE electricity may qualify for PSE's heat pump to heat pump upgrade rebate: $1,500, plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost, when an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump is replaced with a qualifying cold-climate ducted model (pse.com, October 2026). If your equipment qualifies, PSE's instant discount ($300, $400 or $600 by efficiency tier) comes straight off your invoice, and we check which option pays you the most. Repairs are not rebated. Replacing a heat pump needs a mechanical permit, and we pull the required permits for every installation.

In mid-October a Woodinville homeowner noticed the heat pump was no longer keeping the house warm. Our technician found the system low on refrigerant. He added 6.5 pounds along with a leak-detection dye, so if performance drops again the leak can be pinpointed quickly, and set up a recheck. The homeowner also joined the Home Comfort Club for 2027.

A repair visit has a $119 dispatch fee and a $72 standard diagnostic, or $130 for a deeper diagnostic, plus a $330 after-hours fee for qualifying emergencies. You approve the repair price before work begins. Angi's Seattle estimate (May 2026) lists heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220; that is not our price.
Yes, after hours for qualifying emergencies such as no heat in cold weather or a heat pump that has stopped heating. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours; the after-hours fee is $330.
Heat pump air feels cooler than furnace air, so lukewarm air can be normal. Cool air for long stretches can point to a defrost cycle, thermostat settings, a reversing valve problem or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call.
Light frost that clears during defrost is normal. Ice that stays, or a solid block on the coil, points to a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip the ice; switch to emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
AUX heat is the backup heat that helps the heat pump in cold weather or during defrost. EM heat runs only the backup. If AUX runs most of the day in mild weather, or your bill jumps, have the system checked.
Short cycling can come from thermostat placement or settings, a dirty filter, the refrigerant charge, or a unit sized wrong for the house. A diagnostic finds which.
Yes, ductless heads and outdoor units of all major brands, including error codes, leaking heads and line set leaks. We are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer.
It depends on the repair, the age and the refrigerant. R-22 units can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been made since 2020. We price the repair, and if replacement makes more sense we say so; replacement estimates are free and the instant quote gives a range in about 30 seconds.
Replacing a heat pump needs a mechanical permit from the City of Woodinville inside city limits, or from King or Snohomish County outside them; electrical permits come from WA L&I. A part-only repair needs no permit. We pull the required permits for every installation.
No. PSE has no repair or maintenance rebate. If an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump is replaced with a qualifying cold-climate model, PSE's upgrade rebate is $1,500 plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost (checked October 2026).
