What drives the price of a heat pump installation?
Heat pump installation cost in the Puget Sound area comes down to seven things: system size, system type, efficiency, the ductwork, the electrical panel, where the outdoor unit goes and permits.
- Size. Bigger homes need more capacity, measured in tons. A room-by-room load calculation (ACCA Manual J) sets the right size; an oversized unit costs more and short-cycles.
- Ducted or ductless. Ducted systems use your existing ducts. Ductless systems price by the number of indoor heads, so a whole-home ductless setup with four or five heads costs more than one or two.
- Efficiency. Higher SEER2 (cooling) and HSPF2 (heating) ratings cost more up front, and some utility rebates require a minimum rating or a cold-climate model.
- Ductwork condition. Leaky, undersized or missing ducts add repair or new duct runs.
- Electrical panel. The heat pump needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit. Older 100-amp panels may need an upgrade (see our guide to panel upgrades for heat pumps).
- Outdoor unit placement. A ground pad is simplest; wall brackets, roofs and long line sets add labor.
- Permits and labor. Angi lists about $130 for a Seattle permit and $80 to $150 an hour for HVAC labor.
Heat pump rebates by utility (updated September 2026)
Your heat pump rebate depends on your electric utility, your current heating system and, for some programs, your income. The federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025, so in 2026 utility rebates are the main incentive.

Ducted, ductless or dual fuel: which heat pump costs less?
A ductless mini-split is usually the lowest-cost option for one to three rooms, a ducted heat pump is usually the best value when a home already has good ductwork, and a dual fuel (hybrid) system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace for homes that want to keep gas backup.

How much does a heat pump cost for a 2,000 sq ft home?
A 2,000 square foot home in the Seattle area often needs about a 3-ton heat pump, which Angi's Seattle guide puts at $6,670 to $13,850 installed (regional estimate, July 2026). The right size comes from a load calculation, because insulation, windows and layout matter as much as floor area. What is the $5,000 rule for replacing a heat pump or AC?
The $5,000 rule is a rule of thumb: multiply the age of the system in years by the repair cost. If the result is more than $5,000, replacing usually makes more sense than repairing. Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?
No. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), which paid up to $2,000 for a heat pump, ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025. In 2026 the savings come from utility rebates, Washington's HEAR program for income-qualified households and financing.
Do I need a PSE Trade Ally to get the PSE heat pump rebate?
Yes. PSE pays its heat pump rebates only when the installer is a PSE Trade Ally or Recommended Energy Professional; DIY and out-of-network installs do not qualify. Home Comfort Alliance is a PSE Trade Ally for HVAC and water heaters.
Does Tacoma Power give a rebate to replace an old heat pump?
Yes, $1,000 when the new unit is a variable-speed heat pump, unless your home already received a Tacoma Power heat pump incentive. Replacing an existing ductless heat pump doesn't qualify, and the 0% loan doesn't cover it. (Tacoma Power, October 2026.)
Will I need an electrical panel upgrade for a heat pump?
Sometimes. A heat pump needs its own 240-volt circuit, and many 200-amp panels have room for it, while older 100-amp panels may need a load calculation or an upgrade. Our electricians check the panel during the estimate, and a panel upgrade adds to the total cost.
Does a heat pump installation need a permit in Washington?
Yes. The new circuit needs an electrical permit from Washington L&I or from a city that runs its own electrical program, and many cities also require a mechanical permit. Angi lists about $130 for a typical Seattle permit. Home Comfort Alliance pulls the required permits for every installation.
