Can you replace a gas furnace with a heat pump?
Yes. A ducted heat pump with an electric air handler can replace a gas furnace and central air conditioner in one installation, using your existing ducts when they are sized and sealed well enough. Homes without good ductwork can use ductless or ducted mini-split systems instead. You can also keep the gas furnace as backup for the coldest days, which is called a hybrid or dual fuel system.
Which one fits depends on your furnace's age, your ducts, your electrical panel, who sells you gas and electricity, and which rebates you qualify for. Three ways gas homes go electric
- Full conversion: a heat pump and an electric air handler replace the furnace and AC; the furnace comes out and the gas line to it is capped.
- Hybrid (dual fuel): a heat pump replaces the AC; the gas furnace stays and runs only below a set outdoor temperature.
- Ductless or ducted mini-split: for homes with poor ducts or no ducts, or as a first step in the rooms you use most.
Go fully electric, or keep the furnace?
Go fully electric if your furnace is near the end of its life, you are replacing your AC too, you want to stop paying a gas bill, or you qualify for a rebate that requires it, such as PSE's $4,000 income-based rebate or Energy Smart Eastside's $5,000 bonus. Keep the furnace as backup if it is still in good shape, you want a gas safety net for rare freezes, or you are keeping gas for a range or water heater anyway.

What a gas to heat pump conversion involves
A conversion is a heating job, an electrical job and a gas job in one. We size the heat pump to your house, check your ducts, add the circuit and confirm panel capacity, and deal with the gas line the furnace used.
Sizing
A room-by-room load calculation (ACCA Manual J) on every installation. A furnace is often sized for a quick blast of hot air; a heat pump is sized to the house's real heating and cooling load. PSE's hybrid rebate adds its own design rules: a balance point of 30°F or below, with the furnace locked out above 35°F.
Ducts
Ducts built for a furnace may be too small or too leaky for a heat pump's steadier, cooler airflow. We check size and leakage at the estimate, and any duct changes go in your written price.
Electrical panel
A heat pump needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit. If your panel is full or a 100-amp service is already loaded, our licensed electricians (WA Electrical Contractor Lic. #HOMECCA782DC) check capacity at the estimate so any panel work is in your written price. The gas side: the furnace, the gas line and your meter
Our team does residential gas piping, so the gas side is part of the same job. PSE's $4,000 rebate requires the old gas heating equipment to be removed or decommissioned after the heat pump goes in, and PSE says cut and cap is allowed. If you keep gas for a range, water heater or fireplace, your gas service and meter stay. If you want gas service shut off completely, that request goes to your gas utility, PSE or Cascade Natural Gas; ask us at the estimate.
Permits
We pull the required permits for every installation: a mechanical permit for the heat pump and an electrical permit for the circuit, from your city or Washington L&I depending on where you live.
How much does it cost to convert from gas to a heat pump?

Which rebates you get depends on who sells you gas and who sells you electricity. On Cascade Natural Gas? PSE's gas rebates are for PSE gas customers, so homes on Cascade, for example in Bremerton, Port Orchard, Silverdale, Poulsbo, Marysville, Arlington, Stanwood and Mount Vernon, don't qualify for PSE's $4,000 or $1,500 programs. Your electric utility may still have a heat pump rebate; we check your utilities at the estimate.

A recent dual fuel job: Redmond
In September 2026 our installers put in a dual fuel system for a Redmond home that heats with gas: a new gas furnace paired with a 5-ton variable-speed heat pump and a communicating thermostat. The heat pump now does most of the heating and all of the cooling, and the furnace takes over in the coldest weather. We sent the permits, and a PSE rebate applied. This home already had a heat pump next to its gas furnace, so it was a replacement rather than a first conversion, but it shows the keep-the-furnace option described above.

Can I replace my gas furnace with a heat pump?
Yes. Should I keep my gas furnace as backup or go all electric?
Keep the furnace if it is in good shape and you want gas backup for rare cold snaps. Go all electric if the furnace is old, you are replacing your air conditioner too, or you qualify for a rebate that requires full electrification, such as PSE's $4,000 income-based rebate or Energy Smart Eastside's $5,000 bonus. Both require a PSE Trade Ally or Recommended Energy Professional. Home Comfort Alliance is a PSE Trade Ally and handles the rebate paperwork.
Do I have to remove my gas furnace to get PSE's $4,000 rebate?
The old gas heating equipment must be removed or decommissioned after the heat pump is installed, and PSE says cut and cap is allowed. PSE also requires backup heat lockout settings, and the application is due within 30 days of installation. Homes with an existing heat pump or hybrid system are not eligible.
What happens to my gas line and meter?

Cascade lists no heat pump rebate, and its furnace rebates apply only when natural gas is the primary heat, not a backup for a heat pump. Your electric utility may still offer a heat pump rebate, which we check at the estimate.
Is there a rebate for replacing a gas furnace with a heat pump on the Eastside?
Yes. Energy Smart Eastside offers a $1,000 instant rebate on qualifying Mitsubishi, Bryant/Carrier or Day & Night heat pumps in Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Redmond and Sammamish. Households below 150% of King County area median income can add a $5,000 bonus, but only for a fully electric system. Hybrid systems get the $1,000 rebate only.
Does Tacoma Power offer a rebate to switch from gas?
Yes. Tacoma Power offers $1,000 for a variable-speed heat pump that replaces non-electric heat such as gas, installed by a participating contractor. Will I need an electrical panel upgrade?
