Older homes and ductwork
Many of Renton’s older homes have original ducts that were sized for a furnace, not a heat pump, which moves more air at lower temperatures. Before quoting a ducted system, we check duct size, static pressure and leakage. Sometimes the ducts are fine; sometimes a larger return or a few resized runs are needed; and sometimes a ductless system is the better route. You get the options and prices in writing.
Condos and townhomes
Renton’s many condos and townhomes can switch to heat pumps too. Ductless systems are usually the simplest route, since they need only a small wall opening for the line set and no ductwork. The outdoor unit may go on a balcony bracket or a small pad, and most associations want to approve its location, the line set route and the exterior finish. Electrical and permits
A heat pump needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and an outdoor disconnect, and backup heat strips add more load. Our electricians run a load calculation and handle any panel work. Renton permits and inspects both the mechanical installation and the electrical work itself, rather than sending electrical to L&I (City of Renton, permit services; L&I, cities that do their own electrical permits), so everything goes through one city process. We apply, schedule inspections and meet the inspector. Keeping a heat pump running well
Because a heat pump works in both seasons, it logs far more hours than a furnace or an AC alone. Two professional visits a year, one in fall and one in spring, catch small problems early: weak capacitors, low charge from a slow leak, a sticking reversing valve, or a clogged drain on a ductless head. Between visits, clean or change filters regularly, rinse ductless filters every few weeks when the heads run daily, and keep leaves, shrubs and snow away from the outdoor unit so it can breathe.
