| What you notice | Usual cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Blows cool air in heat mode | Low refrigerant, reversing valve, outdoor fan | Test pressures and the valve; find and fix the leak |
| Outdoor unit will not start | Contactor, capacitor, control voltage | Replace the failed part |
| Ice stays on the coil | Defrost control or sensor | Replace the board or sensor |
| One zone or head will not heat | Thermostat wiring, zone control, communication fault | Trace the control wiring and fix the connection or part |
| Ductless head blinking a code | Sensor or board fault | Read the code; replace the part, often under the parts warranty |
| Huge electric bill | Backup heat strips doing the work | Find why the heat pump is not keeping up |
Systems on R-22 refrigerant get a replacement price alongside the repair, since new R-22 is no longer produced (EPA). We repair all major brands; Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer and a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer.
On a heat pump under about 10 years old, repair almost always makes sense. Get a replacement price too when the system is 12 to 15 years old, uses R-22, needs a compressor or keeps failing.
PSE pays $1,500, plus a $2,400 Efficiency Boost for income-qualified homes, to replace an out-of-warranty, centrally ducted all-electric heat pump with a qualifying model through a Trade Ally (PSE upgrade rebate); ductless and dual fuel are excluded. Qualifying new equipment can also carry PSE's instant discount of $300, $400 or $600, and we check which option pays you the most. PSE's enhanced Bainbridge Island rebates ended December 31, 2025. No rebate applies to repairs.
Free replacement estimates; new installations come with a 3-year Comfort Shield labor warranty on new installations, kept active with yearly maintenance. First-year maintenance is included. See heat pump installation on Bainbridge Island.
Puget Sound Energy supplies the island's electricity, and there is no natural gas service, so backup heat on island heat pumps is usually electric strips, propane or oil. Replacing a heat pump needs a City of Bainbridge Island mechanical permit; electrical permits come from Washington L&I. The City's list of work exempt from permits includes replacing a minor part that does not change the equipment's approval or make it unsafe (City exempt work list), so a like-for-like part repair such as a capacitor, sensor or control board normally needs no permit.

In October a Bainbridge Island homeowner called because one zone of their Carrier heat pump system, the bedroom zone served by a fan coil with electric backup heat, had stopped heating while the rest of the house was fine.
Our technician traced the control wiring and found the white wire had come off at that zone's thermostat. He reconnected it, tested the zone through a heating cycle, and the system was working properly before he left.

A repair visit carries a $119 dispatch (trip) fee plus a $72 standard diagnostic, or $130 for a deeper one; qualifying after-hours emergencies add a $330 after-hours fee. You get the repair price in writing before work starts. For context, Angi lists Seattle-area heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220 (May 2026); that is not our price.
On zoned and ductless systems each zone has its own thermostat or head. A loose thermostat wire, a failed zone control, a communication fault or a dirty filter on that head are the usual causes.
It speeds up corrosion on waterfront units, especially coil fins, fan motors and electrical connections. Yearly maintenance and rinsing the outdoor coil help, and corroded electrical parts are a common repair on the island.
Light frost is normal in damp cold weather and melts off in a defrost cycle. Ice that stays, or ice building on top of the unit, points to a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip it off.
