| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks, no flame | Ignitor or flame sensor | Test resistance; clean or replace (ignitor replacement $353 to $821) |
| Starts, then shuts off | Pressure switch, inducer or vent | Measure draft and check the vent path |
| Blows cold, then stops | High-limit trip from poor airflow | Fix the airflow, then test the switch |
| Electric furnace runs cool | Element, sequencer or relay | Measure each heating stage |
| Blower problems | Motor, capacitor or board | Measure voltage and amp draw |
| No call for heat | Thermostat or wiring | Test the circuit; thermostat replacement $299 to $1,840 |
Monroe homes get electricity from Snohomish PUD and natural gas from PSE, and some older homes in and around town still heat with oil. We repair all three. Gas furnace repairs usually sit in the ignition chain: ignitor, flame sensor, gas valve, pressure switch and draft fan. Electric furnaces fail at the elements, sequencers and relays. Oil furnaces need a yearly cleaning, with a new nozzle and filter, or soot builds up and the burner starts tripping. An oil furnace tune-up is $336, or $288 for Home Comfort Club members.
Thinking about leaving oil or electric resistance heat behind? See heat pumps in Monroe.
A common rule of thumb multiplies the furnace's age by the repair cost. A 15-year-old furnace with a $400 repair scores 6,000, which says it is time to at least price a replacement. A 6-year-old furnace with the same repair scores 2,400, so repairing is the easy call. It is only a guide: safety, comfort and your plans for the house matter too. We always give you the actual repair price first.
There are no rebates for repairs. If you replace an electric furnace with a ducted heat pump, Snohomish PUD offers $1,800 or $2,500 as an instant discount through a registered contractor such as Home Comfort Alliance (Snohomish PUD heating rebates). PSE gas customers can get $1,500 for adding a qualifying ducted heat pump to a gas furnace (PSE hybrid heat pump rebate).
Replacement estimates are free, and our instant HVAC quote gives a range in about 30 seconds. Most furnace installations take between 4 and 10 hours. What you get with a replacement: a 3-year Comfort Shield labor warranty on new installations, kept active with yearly maintenance. First-year maintenance is included. See furnace replacement in Monroe.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as no heat in cold weather or a burning or electrical smell. Standard visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
Sky Valley homes pay the same published visit fees as the rest of our service area. The repair itself is priced in writing after the diagnosis.

Replacing minor parts needs no permit. Replacing a furnace in the City of Monroe needs a mechanical permit from the Permit Division (360-863-4501, Monroe permits), plus an electrical permit from Washington L&I if wiring changes; Monroe does not issue its own electrical permits. Homes outside city limits go through Snohomish County Planning and Development Services, which also requires a permit for gas piping. We pull the required permits for every installation.

In early September a Monroe homeowner in 98272 called with no heat and a hunch that the ignitor had failed. Our technician tested it, and the meter read it as an open circuit. He replaced it with a universal nitride ignitor and the furnace lit and heated again.
Because the furnace was older, he walked the homeowner through the cost of future repairs against the age of the equipment and priced a replacement. The homeowner chose a new 80% gas furnace, and we scheduled the installation for later that month.

A repair visit has a $119 dispatch (trip) fee, and diagnosis is $72 for a standard diagnostic or $130 for a deeper one. After-hours visits for qualifying emergencies carry a $330 after-hours fee. A rule of thumb: multiply the furnace's age by the repair cost. Above about $5,000, replacement is usually worth a look. We give you the actual repair price first so you can decide.
Most often the burners are not lighting (a worn ignitor or a sooty flame sensor), or they light and then shut off because a dirty filter tripped the limit switch. A thermostat fan left on ON also blows room-temperature air between cycles.
Short cycles usually trace back to airflow (a clogged filter or closed registers), a flame sensor that cannot prove the flame, a pressure switch fault or a thermostat in a bad spot. Each restart wears the ignitor and blower, so get it looked at.
