Signs your heating needs attention
- Cold air from the vents while the system runs.
- The furnace starts, shuts off, and tries again several times.
- Rooms at the far end of the house stay several degrees colder.
- Banging, grinding or squealing from the furnace or outdoor unit.

Repair or replace?
A repair is usually the right call on a system that is under about 15 years old and has been reliable. Replacement starts to make more sense when:
- The furnace is 15 to 20 years old or more and needs a major part.
- You have had repeated breakdowns over the last couple of winters.
- A cracked heat exchanger or venting problem has been found.
- You heat with electric resistance and want lower bills; a heat pump with a PUD rebate may pay back faster than another repair.

Airflow, ducts and thermostats
Many heating complaints are really airflow problems. A clogged filter, a closed or blocked return, crushed flex duct in the attic, or leaky joints in a crawlspace can leave rooms cold even when the furnace is fine. Permits and safety
Replacing a furnace or installing a heat pump inside Monroe city limits requires a mechanical permit from the City of Monroe, and an electrical permit from Washington L&I if wiring changes (City of Monroe, When Do I Need a Permit?). Like-for-like repairs do not. Every gas appliance we work on gets a combustion and carbon monoxide check before we leave.
