Still cold? Call (425) 645-0404 and tell us the brand and what the system is doing.
A heat pump can keep heating through a Skagit Valley cold snap, but it runs longer, defrosts more often and may lean on its backup heat. Lukewarm supply air is normal. Thin frost that clears in defrost, and steam during defrost, are normal too.
Ice that builds into a solid block, or a unit that stops heating, needs a repair visit. The usual causes are a defrost board or sensor, the outdoor fan or low refrigerant. Do not chip the ice; switch to emergency heat if you have it.
AUX heat helps the heat pump in cold weather and during defrost. EM heat runs the backup alone. AUX running most of a mild day, or a sharp rise in your bill, is a reason to book a diagnostic.
We repair all major brands of ductless mini-splits and ducted heat pumps in Mount Vernon, including systems we did not install. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer and received Gensco's Ductless and Multi-Zone Excellence recognition for 2024 to 2025. Typical fixes include drain clogs, head fan motors, sensors, boards and refrigerant leaks. More on ductless systems.
Many Mount Vernon properties are in the Skagit River's 100-year floodplain. If flood water reached the outdoor unit or an indoor air handler, keep the system off and have it inspected before you run it. Electrical parts and controls that sat in water can fail or be unsafe after they dry.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather.
Business-hours visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with same-day service when possible.
Most heat pump faults can be repaired. Weigh replacement when the system is old, the repair is big, or it runs on R-22, which can still be serviced although no new R-22 has been made since 2020 (EPA).
For PSE electric customers, replacing an out-of-warranty, centrally ducted, all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model can earn $1,500 plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost; ductless and dual fuel systems do not qualify (PSE upgrade rebate, October 2026). PSE's midstream discount of $300, $400 or $600 may apply at purchase. Cascade offers no heat pump rebate, and its furnace rebates exclude a furnace that backs up a heat pump.
We quote the repair first. To compare, use the instant quote for a range in about 30 seconds, or see heat pump installation in Mount Vernon.
We pull the required permits for every installation.

Many newer heat pumps include a refrigerant detection system that watches for leaks and controls the equipment if it senses one. On a Mount Vernon heat pump we installed in July, that controller tested faulty at installation, so it was bypassed until a replacement could be fitted under warranty.
In September our technician returned, confirmed the old controller was getting no power in or out, installed the new one and ran the heat pump through heating and cooling several times. The system worked properly, and the replacement was covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Repair visits start with a $119 dispatch (trip) fee and a $72 standard diagnostic, or $130 for a deeper one. Qualifying after-hours emergencies add a $330 after-hours fee. The repair is priced in writing before any work begins. Angi lists Seattle-area heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220 (May 2026) as a regional benchmark; that is not our price.
Our heat pump tune-up is $230 per piece of equipment, or $180 for Home Comfort Club members.
Most faults, such as capacitors, contactors, sensors, defrost controls, fan motors and small leaks, are repairable. Replacement depends on the repair, the age and the refrigerant. We price the repair, and replacement estimates are free.
Yes, but it runs longer, defrosts more often and may lean on backup heat. Lukewarm air can be normal. If the unit stops heating or ices solid, it needs a repair visit.
Some lukewarm air is normal. Cold air for long stretches can mean a defrost cycle, a thermostat setting, a reversing valve or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call.
Frost that melts in defrost is normal. Ice that stays, or a solid block on the coil, suggests a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip the ice; switch to emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
Aux heat is backup heat that helps in cold weather or during defrost. EM heat runs only the backup. AUX running most of a mild day, or a jump in your bill, is worth a check.
Yes, all major brands, ducted and ductless. We are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and Lennox Premier Dealer.
Same-day service when possible. Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7; heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies, such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather ($330 after-hours fee).
No. PSE and Cascade have no repair rebate, and Cascade has no heat pump rebate. Replacing an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model can earn PSE's $1,500 upgrade rebate plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost (pse.com, October 2026).
Part-only repairs need no permit. Replacing a heat pump needs a mechanical permit from the City of Mount Vernon (Skagit County outside city limits) and an L&I electrical permit; we pull the required permits for every installation.
