In September a Mount Vernon furnace kept shutting off early. Our technician replaced the high-temperature limit switch, the safety device that shuts the burners off if the furnace overheats, and tested the system. The furnace then ran longer, which revealed a second problem: a relay on the control board was chattering, so the blower never ramped up to full speed. He recommended replacing the control board and low-voltage transformer, then confirming the blower motor. The furnace was past its manufacturer warranty and showed no service history, so he also gave the homeowner the option to consider a replacement.
