Seattle's worst outages come with fall and winter windstorms. On November 19, 2024, a bomb cyclone brought gusts near 60 mph and cut power to more than 114,000 Seattle City Light customers, the utility's largest outage since 2006 (City Light Powerlines). A standby generator starts on its own when the grid drops and keeps chosen circuits running until power returns. It is worth pricing if you rely on medical equipment, have a sump pump, work from home, or need your furnace or heat pump running through a multi-day outage. More planning tips: planning a standby generator installation and 5 ways to prepare for a power outage.
We list what you want running, such as the furnace or heat pump, refrigerator, sump pump, lights and outlets, and size the generator to those loads. An essential-circuit setup costs less; whole-home backup needs a larger unit. We also check your electrical panel, because an older or full panel may need work before a transfer switch fits (electrical panel upgrade in Seattle).
Seattle City Light warns that a generator connected without a transfer switch can send power back into the lines and put crews at severe risk, and it says transfer switches must be installed by a licensed electrician and approved by City Light (City Light generator safety). We install the switch as part of every standby job.
Most Seattle standby generators run on natural gas. If PSE supplies your gas, PSE reviews whether your meter and service can carry the added load before the generator is turned on, and any meter or service change is billed to the customer. Homes without gas service can run the generator on a propane tank.
The generator sits outdoors on a level pad with the manufacturer's clearances from windows, doors and vents. Seattle's noise code (SMC 25.08) limits sound between homes to 55 dB(A), and 10 dB(A) less at night, so we choose a spot with neighbors in mind and set the weekly self-test for daytime hours.
The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) issues the electrical permit for a standby generator and inspects the work, and the gas piping to the generator needs its own permit (SDCI electrical permits). We hold a Seattle business license and the gas piping license SDCI requires, so one company handles both the wiring and the gas line. PSE turns on gas service to the generator only after the permit is approved. We pull the required permits for every installation and arrange the inspections.
Your price depends on the generator size, the fuel, the transfer switch, the length of the gas line and any panel work. We set an exact, upfront price at a free in-home estimate, and right now we offer $1,000 off generators. Generator maintenance after installation is $465.

In July 2026 one of our electricians did the yearly maintenance on a Generac 24 kW standby generator at a home in Seattle's 98115 ZIP code. Regular service like this, $465 a visit, keeps the battery, oil, filters and automatic transfer working so the generator starts on its own the next time a windstorm takes the power out.

Our Redmond branch team installs standby generators across Seattle, from the north end to West Seattle and the south end. Nearby, we also install standby generators in Tacoma. For all areas, see residential generators.
It depends on generator size, fuel, transfer switch, gas line length and any panel work. We set an exact, upfront price on a free in-home estimate. For a benchmark, Angi lists a Seattle generator installation average of $2,601 (March 2026); that is not our price. Ask about $1,000 off generators.
Yes. Seattle's SDCI issues the electrical permit, and gas piping needs its own permit. We pull the required permits for every installation and arrange the inspections.
Yes. Seattle City Light says transfer switches must be installed by a licensed electrician and approved by City Light. A switch stops your generator from sending power back into the lines crews are repairing.
Both work. If you have PSE natural gas, PSE reviews whether your meter and service can carry the extra load. Without gas service, the generator runs on a propane tank.
It depends on what you want running: essential circuits such as the furnace, fridge, sump pump and lights, or the whole home. We size it from your loads during the estimate.
Sometimes. An older or full panel may need work before a transfer switch fits. We check your panel at the estimate and tell you upfront.
Seattle's noise code (SMC 25.08) limits sound between homes to 55 dB(A) in the day and 10 dB(A) less at night. We choose a placement with that in mind and set the weekly self-test for daytime hours.
