Quick checks before an emergency call
If nothing on the list above applies, these checks take a few minutes and can save an after-hours fee:
- Thermostat on HEAT, set above room temperature, with fresh batteries.
- Furnace breaker on, and the switch on or near the furnace turned on.
- Filter not clogged; a blocked filter makes the furnace overheat and shut off.
- Furnace front panel fully closed so its safety switch is engaged.
- Outdoor vent pipes on high-efficiency furnaces clear of snow and debris.
Don't relight pilots, open panels or keep resetting the furnace. Repeated lockouts are a safety signal.
Staying safe and warm while you wait
Keep everyone in one room with the door closed, use layers and blankets, and close curtains at night. A portable electric space heater is fine if it sits on the floor, away from bedding, curtains and furniture.
