Heat pump with a gas furnace backup? If you smell gas, get everyone outside before you call. From outside, phone 911 or Puget Sound Energy at 1-888-225-5773 (PSE gas leak steps).
Kent heat pump calls use our standard published fees. After the diagnosis you get one written price for the repair and decide before anything is done.

For a regional comparison, Angi's Seattle estimate (May 2026) lists heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220, including capacitors at $110 to $280 and refrigerant leak repairs at $280 to $1,670 (Angi Seattle HVAC repair costs). Those are Angi's estimates, not our prices.

If it still will not heat, call (425) 645-0404. Tell us the brand, whether it is ducted or ductless, and any blinking lights.
Heat pump air feels cooler than furnace air, so lukewarm air from the vents can be normal. A light coat of frost on the outdoor unit that melts off during a defrost cycle is normal too, and so is a little steam while it defrosts.
A solid block of ice that stays, or ice building on the top and sides, points to a defrost control, a sensor, the outdoor fan or low refrigerant from a leak. Do not chip the ice. Switch to emergency heat if your system has it and book a repair.
Aux heat is the backup heat that helps the heat pump in cold weather and during defrost. EM heat runs only the backup. If AUX runs most of the day when it is not cold, or your electric bill jumps, have the system checked.
Many Kent homes heat with ductless mini-splits, often one head in the living area and more in bedrooms. We repair all major brands, ducted and ductless, including systems we did not install. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer and received Gensco's Ductless Excellence award for 2024 to 2025.
Common ductless faults we fix are clogged head filters, blocked condensate lines, failed fan motors, sensors and boards, and refrigerant leaks at the line set connections. Read more about our ductless systems.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather.
Business-hours visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with same-day service when possible.
Most heat pump faults are repairable: capacitors, contactors, sensors, defrost controls, fan motors and small leaks. Age, the size of the repair and the refrigerant decide the rest. Units that run on R-22 can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been produced since 2020 (EPA), so recharging an old R-22 system gets expensive.
Replacing an out-of-warranty, centrally ducted, all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model can earn PSE's upgrade rebate of $1,500, plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost; ductless and dual fuel systems do not qualify (PSE upgrade rebate, October 2026). PSE's midstream program can also take $300, $400 or $600 off qualifying equipment at purchase.
We price the repair first and tell you if replacement makes more sense. Replacement estimates are free, our instant quote gives a range in about 30 seconds, and our heat pump replacement page covers the options.
We pull the required permits for every installation.

In October a Kent homeowner called because their single-head Mitsubishi ductless heat pump would not turn on. Our technician found the filter in the bedroom head clogged far beyond normal. The restricted airflow was making the whole system shut down.
He cleaned the filter, restarted the system and it fired up and heated normally, so no parts were needed. It is an easy problem to prevent: check and rinse the mesh filters in each ductless head regularly while the system is working hard through the heating season.
We repair heat pumps and mini-splits in East Hill, the Kent Valley, Downtown Kent and around Lake Meridian. Our Sumner team also serves nearby Auburn, Renton and Federal Way.
Repair visits carry a $119 dispatch (trip) fee. Diagnosis is $72 standard or $130 for a deeper diagnostic, and after-hours visits for qualifying emergencies carry a $330 after-hours fee. You get an upfront price for the repair before any work begins. For context, Angi lists Seattle-area heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220 (May 2026); that is not our price.
A heat pump tune-up is $230, or $180 for Home Comfort Club members, per piece of equipment.
Heat pump air feels cooler than furnace air, so lukewarm air can be normal. Cold air for long stretches can point to a defrost cycle, thermostat settings, a reversing valve or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call.
Light frost that clears during defrost is normal. Ice that stays, or a solid block on the coil, suggests a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip the ice; switch to emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
Aux heat is the backup heat that helps the heat pump in cold weather or during defrost. EM heat runs only the backup. If AUX runs most of the day in mild weather, or your bill jumps, have it checked.
Ductless units slow down and run defrost cycles in freezing weather, and some older models stop heating near their low-temperature limit. If a head stays off or blows cold for long stretches, a sensor, board or refrigerant problem is likely, so book a diagnostic.
Same-day service when possible. Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7; heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies, such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather ($330 after-hours fee).
Yes, all major brands, ducted and ductless. We are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and Lennox Premier Dealer.
It depends on the repair, the age and the refrigerant. R-22 units can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been made since 2020. We price the repair, and if replacement makes more sense we say so; replacement estimates are free and the instant quote gives a range in about 30 seconds.
No. PSE has no repair or maintenance rebate. If you replace an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model, PSE's upgrade rebate is $1,500 plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost (ductless not eligible; pse.com, October 2026).
Part-only repairs need no permit. Replacing a heat pump needs a City of Kent mechanical permit (King County outside city limits) and an L&I electrical permit; we pull the required permits for every installation.
