Signs your AC needs service
- Air from the vents is barely cooler than the room.
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin.
- Ice on the copper line or the indoor coil.
- Water pooling around the indoor unit or furnace.
- The breaker trips when the compressor starts.
- It runs all afternoon without reaching the set temperature, even on a moderate day.
Before you call, check that the thermostat is set to cool, the filter is clean, and the outdoor disconnect and breaker are on. If it is still not cooling, turn the system off so a failing part doesn’t take the compressor with it.
Quick fixes to try before you call
Some cooling problems are simple enough to check yourself in a few minutes:
- Thermostat: set to cool, set below room temperature, and fresh batteries if it uses them.
- Filter: a clogged filter can freeze the indoor coil and cut airflow to a trickle. Replace it and let an iced coil thaw for a few hours with the system off and the fan on.
- Breakers and disconnect: check the breaker for the outdoor unit and the indoor air handler or furnace, and the pull-out disconnect beside the outdoor unit.
- Condensate switch: many systems shut off when the drain backs up. A full drain pan or a tripped float switch points to a clogged line.
- Outdoor coil: if it is matted with debris, rinse it gently with a hose from the inside out after turning the power off.
If none of that works, or the breaker trips again, stop resetting it and book a visit.

Sizing, placement and the upstairs problem
A common cooling complaint in two-story homes is the upstairs. Heat rises, attic ducts gain heat, and one thermostat downstairs can’t see it. Bigger equipment rarely fixes that; it cools the downstairs faster and shuts off. We size the system with a room-by-room load calculation, look at duct size and insulation in the attic, and often recommend a second zone or a single ductless head upstairs instead of a larger central unit.
Outdoor unit placement matters too. We keep it on a level pad with clearance on all sides, away from dryer vents and bedroom windows, and out of roof drip lines so it isn’t pounded by runoff all winter.
Smoke days and indoor air
In some summers, wildfire smoke settles over western Washington, and those days are often the same hot days you want the windows closed. A cooling system lets you keep the house sealed, and a higher-rated filter or a media filter cabinet on a ducted system captures much of the fine smoke particulate. Spring AC and heat pump maintenance
A spring check keeps a cooling system ready for the first hot week instead of failing during it. We clean the outdoor coil, which collects cottonwood fluff, moss and grass clippings; check refrigerant pressures and temperature split; test the capacitor, contactor and fan motor; flush the condensate line so it can’t back up into a ceiling or furnace; and replace the filter. For heat pumps, the same visit covers heating readiness in fall. Between visits, keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit and change filters every one to three months while the system is running daily.
