Our Sumner branch sends heating technicians across the Narrows to repair and maintain furnaces, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits and dual-fuel systems in Gig Harbor and around the peninsula. Call (425) 645-0404 or send the form and a comfort advisor will book your visit.
Gig Harbor winters are cool and wet, so heating runs for much of the year. Homes here heat in more ways than most: electric baseboards and furnaces on Peninsula Light Company power, gas furnaces where Puget Sound Energy gas is available (City of Gig Harbor, local utility providers), propane in some rural areas, and a growing number of heat pumps.
Seattle-area data puts most furnace repairs between $139 and $544, averaging about $341, with major repairs reaching about $2,000 (Angi, Seattle furnace repair costs, updated August 2026). These are published estimates, not our prices. You get a written price after diagnosis and nothing is done until you approve it.
Each fuel has its own common failures:
| System | Common calls |
|---|---|
| Gas furnace | Ignitor and flame sensor faults, inducer motors, pressure switches, blocked condensate drains on high-efficiency models |
| Electric furnace | Burned-out heating elements, sequencers, relays and blower motors |
| Heat pump | Capacitors, contactors, refrigerant leaks, defrost controls, reversing valves |
| Ductless mini-split | Dirty filters and coils, drain line clogs, sensor and communication faults |
| Baseboard heaters | Failed thermostats and elements, loose connections |
Quick checks before calling: thermostat set to heat, a clean filter, the furnace switch on and no tripped breakers. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.
Outdoor units close to the harbor and Puget Sound shoreline sit in salty, humid air. Over time that can corrode coil fins, fasteners and electrical connections. On waterfront homes we recommend rinsing the outdoor coil with fresh water a few times a year (power off first), checking for white or green corrosion on connections at each service, and choosing units with coated coils when replacing. A heat pump that ices over and stays iced, blows cool air for long stretches, or runs constantly on backup heat needs a service call.
Many Gig Harbor peninsula homes still heat with electric baseboards or an electric furnace. Those are the homes that gain the most from a heat pump, which moves heat instead of making it. PenLight offers heat pump incentives to its members and publishes a list of qualified contractors, which includes Home Comfort Alliance (PenLight heat pump incentives and contractor list). Incentive amounts change, so we confirm current PenLight figures when we price your system. PSE gas customers adding a heat pump to a gas furnace can look at PSE’s hybrid heat pump rebate of $1,500, plus up to $2,400 through Efficiency Boost (PSE hybrid heat pump rebate). We will tell you when a repair is the better value. Replacement starts to make sense when the system is 15 to 20 years old and needs a major part, when breakdowns come every winter, when a cracked heat exchanger or venting defect turns up, or when electric heat bills are high enough that a heat pump pays back. We price both on paper. For furnaces, see our Gig Harbor furnace replacement page.
Hillside and waterfront homes take the brunt of wind off Puget Sound, and rooms on the windward side can feel cold even when the thermostat is satisfied. Heating equipment is not always the cause: air leaks around windows and rim joists, uninsulated floors over crawlspaces, and leaky ducts all play a part. We measure airflow and temperatures room by room, seal and insulate accessible ducts, balance dampers, and suggest a ductless head for a room the main system cannot reach. Fixing the envelope and ducts first often means a smaller, less expensive system later.
In homes heated by electricity, controls make a real difference to the PenLight or PSE bill. Old line-voltage baseboard thermostats often swing several degrees and waste energy; modern electronic or programmable models hold temperature much more tightly. With a heat pump, the thermostat must know about backup heat: a large morning setback on a basic thermostat can bring the electric strips on every day, erasing much of the heat pump’s savings. We set up heat pump thermostats with adaptive recovery and sensible outdoor temperature lockouts, and replace baseboard thermostats room by room where it helps.
Your comfort advisor books a window and notes what you are seeing, any error code, and the type of system, so the technician crosses the bridge with the right parts. On site, the technician tests the equipment while it runs: electrical readings, airflow and temperature rise, gas pressure on gas furnaces, and refrigerant pressures and defrost operation on heat pumps. You get the diagnosis and written repair options, with replacement numbers alongside if the system is near the end of its life. After the repair, the system runs through a full heating cycle, and fuel-burning equipment gets a carbon monoxide check before we leave.
Wet winters keep Gig Harbor homes closed up for months, so the heating system’s filter does most of the work of keeping indoor air clean. Change or clean standard filters every one to three months while the heat runs, or upgrade to a deeper media filter cabinet that captures more fine dust with less airflow restriction. Condensation on windows, musty smells in lower levels, or damp crawlspaces point to moisture that the heating system alone will not fix; bath and kitchen fans that vent outdoors and a dry crawlspace help. If you notice these signs, mention them on your visit and we will look at airflow and ventilation along with the equipment.
Inside Gig Harbor city limits, heating equipment replacements are permitted by the City of Gig Harbor, which offers an application for minor residential mechanical work (City of Gig Harbor, building permits, forms and fees). Outside city limits, Pierce County issues the mechanical permit. Wiring changes need an L&I electrical permit (L&I, cities that do their own electrical permits). Like-for-like repairs do not need a permit. We handle the permits for our installations.
We support the manufacturer’s warranty on covered equipment parts, and we stand behind our heating installations with a 1-year labor warranty from installation.
Join our Home Comfort Club, a monthly membership starting at $15 a month, and a new system we install gets extended labor coverage for as long as your membership stays active, up to 5 years from installation. Ask your technician or comfort advisor for the current plan details.

Yes. We repair electric furnaces, and we help homes on baseboard heat compare ductless heat pump options.
Yes, for members, through qualified contractors. Home Comfort Alliance is on PenLight’s contractor list. We confirm current amounts when pricing your system.
It can corrode coils and connections on waterfront homes. Regular freshwater rinsing and coated coils on replacements help.
The City of Gig Harbor inside city limits and Pierce County outside them; L&I for any wiring changes.
Electric resistance heat is expensive to run, and old baseboard thermostats waste more. Better controls help; a heat pump usually cuts the bill the most.
Usually a large overnight setback. Smaller setbacks or a thermostat with adaptive recovery keeps the strips off.
