Home Comfort Alliance repairs ducted and ductless heat pumps across Issaquah, WA, with an upfront price before any work begins. We repair the heat pump side of dual fuel systems too. A repair visit has a $119 dispatch fee and a $72 standard diagnostic, listed separately, and you approve the written repair price first.
Issaquah is served by our Redmond team. Call (425) 645-0404: our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7.
Breaker keeps tripping or you smell burning? Turn the heat pump off at the thermostat and leave the breaker off, then call. In a dual fuel home, a gas smell means leaving the house and calling PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or 911 from outside.
This is a common heat pump question. In heating mode, the reversing valve switches the refrigerant flow, and the defrost control periodically flips it back to melt frost off the outdoor coil. Neither is used much in summer. A sticking reversing valve, a failed defrost board or sensor, or a slow refrigerant leak that only shows up when the outdoor air is cold can all leave you with a heat pump that cooled perfectly in August and struggles in November.
A diagnostic separates these quickly: refrigerant pressures and temperatures on both sides of the system, a forced defrost test, and a check of the valve solenoid and the board outputs.
A light, even frost that melts away during each defrost cycle is normal. A thick block of ice, ice only on part of the coil, or ice on the refrigerant lines is not. Turn the system to EM heat if you have it, do not chip the ice, and book a repair.
AUX means the backup heat is helping the heat pump, which is normal in cold snaps and during defrost. EM means only the backup is running. Electric backup heat costs much more to run, so a thermostat that shows AUX all day in mild weather is a sign something in the heat pump is not pulling its weight.
We repair ductless indoor heads and outdoor units of all major brands: sensors, drain lines, fan motors, boards and communication faults between the heads and the outdoor unit. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer. More about ductless systems.
| Part | What you notice |
|---|---|
| Capacitor | Outdoor unit hums but the fan or compressor will not start |
| Contactor | Outdoor unit will not turn on, or will not turn off |
| Outdoor fan motor | Compressor runs, fan does not spin; high pressure trips |
| Defrost board or sensor | Heavy icing, or the system cycles off and on in defrost |
| Reversing valve | Cools but will not heat, or heats weakly |
| Refrigerant leak | Weak heat, icing, long run times; we find the leak before adding refrigerant |
| Thermostat | Wrong mode, no call for heat; replacement runs $299 to $1,840 |
See our heat pump repair cost guide for what each part usually involves.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating or a burning or electrical smell. Standard visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
Our fees are published, and the dispatch fee and diagnostic appear as separate lines. After diagnosis you get the repair price in writing.

Boards, capacitors, contactors, sensors and fan motors are routine repairs. A failed compressor, a leaking coil on an older unit, or a system on R-22 refrigerant is the point to compare a replacement price.
If you replace an out-of-warranty, centrally ducted, all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate ducted model, PSE pays $1,500 plus an income-based Efficiency Boost of up to $2,400; ductless and dual fuel systems are excluded, and a PSE Trade Ally or REP must do the work (PSE upgrade rebate, read October 2026). Home Comfort Alliance is a PSE Trade Ally. Issaquah is also an Energy Smart Eastside city; for replacing an existing heat pump, ask us first and we will check whether your system qualifies (Energy Smart Eastside).
Replacement estimates are free, and our instant HVAC quote gives a range in about 30 seconds. We size every installation with an ACCA Manual J load calculation, and what you get with a replacement is a 3-year Comfort Shield labor warranty on new installations, kept active with yearly maintenance. First-year maintenance is included. See heat pumps in Issaquah and cold-climate heat pumps.
In a dual fuel home the heat pump carries the load until the outdoor temperature drops to a set point, then the gas furnace takes over. When one half fails, the other often runs more than it should. This page covers the heat pump side; for the furnace, see furnace repair in Issaquah.
PSE supplies electricity and natural gas in Issaquah. A like-for-like part repair normally needs no permit, but Issaquah's code also covers mechanical repairs, so we check with the Permit Center when a repair changes the system. Replacing a heat pump inside city limits needs a City of Issaquah permit through MyBuildingPermit (Permit Center 425-837-3100, Issaquah permits), and residential outdoor HVAC equipment goes through plan review (Issaquah mechanical permits). Klahanie is in the City of Sammamish, and Mirrormont is unincorporated King County (206-296-6600). Electrical permits come from Washington L&I. We pull the required permits for every installation.

This one was a maintenance visit, not a breakdown: in mid October our technician serviced a dual fuel system (gas furnace plus heat pump) in an Issaquah home in 98027 before the cold set in.
On the heat pump side he tested the capacitor and contactor, measured the low and high side refrigerant pressures and the compressor amp draw, and checked that the indoor coil was draining. Those are the parts that fail most often on the first cold mornings, which is why a fall tune-up catches so many winter repairs early. The furnace side got its own checks, from igniter resistance and flame sensor to gas pressure and venting.

Repair visits carry a $119 dispatch (trip) fee. Diagnosis is $72 standard or $130 for a deeper diagnostic, and after-hours visits for qualifying emergencies carry a $330 after-hours fee. You get an upfront price for the repair before any work begins. For context, Angi lists Seattle-area heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220 (May 2026); that is not our price.
Heating mode uses parts that cooling never does, such as the reversing valve and defrost controls, and a small refrigerant leak often shows up first in cold weather. A diagnostic finds which.
Heat pump air feels cooler than furnace air, so lukewarm air can be normal. Cold air for long stretches can point to a defrost cycle, thermostat settings, a reversing valve or low refrigerant. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call us.
Light frost that clears during defrost is normal. Ice that stays, or a solid block on the coil, points to a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip the ice; switch to emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
Aux heat is backup heat that helps in cold weather and during defrost; EM heat runs only the backup. If AUX runs most of the day in mild weather, or your bill jumps, have the system checked.
