Kirkland's long, wet heating season means a heat pump spends many hours defrosting and running. These are the warning signs worth a call:
Our heat pump repair guide has more detail.
Kirkland homes range from older houses to hillside and lakefront homes along Lake Washington and newer infill and townhomes. Tree cover drops leaves and needles on outdoor units, and many homes run ductless heads in rooms the ducts never reached.
| Problem | Likely cause | How we fix it |
|---|---|---|
| No heat from one ductless head | Refrigerant line, branch box, sensor or indoor board | Test each zone and the lines that feed it |
| Outdoor unit will not run | Capacitor, contactor, outdoor control board | Trace the control signal, then test each part |
| Ice that will not clear | Defrost control, blocked coil, low refrigerant | Clean the coil and check defrost and charge |
| Lukewarm air and a high bill | Refrigerant leak, reversing valve, aux heat staging | Check pressures, find leaks and set lockouts |
Multi-zone systems use one outdoor unit to feed several indoor heads, sometimes through a branch box. When one zone fails, we test the head, the branch box and the refrigerant lines between them. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, won Gensco's Ductless and Multi-Zone Excellence awards for 2024 to 2025, and services all major brands. PSE supplies both electricity and natural gas in Kirkland, so many homes pair a heat pump with a gas furnace. We repair the heat pump side here and check the switchover; for the furnace side, see furnace repair in Kirkland.
When a heat pump fails on a cold night, we offer after-hours emergency HVAC service in Kirkland. The after-hours fee is $330. Call right away for no heat in freezing weather, a burning smell or a breaker that keeps tripping.
Until a technician arrives, use emergency heat and keep children and pets away from an iced or noisy outdoor unit. See our emergency heat pump repair page for more steps.
A reliable system with one failed part is usually worth repairing. Replacement starts to make more sense when:

Kirkland permits: the City of Kirkland requires a mechanical permit to install or replace a heat pump and issues its own electrical permits, with applications through MyBuildingPermit.com. Part-only repairs do not need a permit. We pull the required permits for every installation. Here is how a repair visit goes.

In September 2026 our technician returned to a north Kirkland home (98034) with a multi-zone ductless heat pump. A section of the insulated 3/8 inch liquid line between the outdoor unit and the branch box, which sends refrigerant to the indoor heads, needed to be replaced. He replaced that line, recharged the system with 18.5 pounds of R-410A refrigerant and checked that the system was running properly before he left.

Check that the thermostat is set to heat. During a defrost cycle a heat pump can blow cool air for a few minutes. If it lasts longer, a reversing valve, low refrigerant or a control fault may be the cause, and a technician should test it.
Light frost is normal and should melt during defrost. Ice that stays usually means a defrost, airflow or refrigerant problem. Do not chip it. Switch to emergency heat and call us.
