It is a common Bothell complaint: the heat pump cooled fine in August, then struggles in November. Heating uses parts that cooling barely touches, such as the reversing valve and the defrost controls. A small refrigerant leak also tends to show up first in cold weather, when the system needs its full charge. A diagnostic narrows it down quickly.
Lukewarm air from a heat pump is normal. So are thin frost that melts in a defrost cycle and a little steam while it defrosts. A heavy block of ice that stays, or a unit that stops heating, points to a defrost board or sensor, the outdoor fan or low refrigerant. Leave the ice alone and switch to emergency heat if you have it.
AUX heat backs up the heat pump in cold weather and during defrost; EM heat runs the backup only. If AUX is on most of a mild day, or your bill climbs, book a check.
We repair all major brands of ductless mini-splits and ducted heat pumps, including systems we did not install. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer and won Gensco's Ductless Excellence award for 2024 to 2025 (ductless systems).
Many Bothell homes run a dual fuel system: a heat pump paired with a gas furnace that takes over in colder weather. We service both halves in one visit. If the furnace side is the problem, see furnace repair in Bothell, or read how dual fuel heat pumps work.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather.
Business-hours visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with same-day service when possible.
Bothell's electricity is split: PSE serves the King County side and Snohomish County PUD serves the Snohomish County side, while PSE supplies gas citywide. That matters only if you replace, because no utility pays toward repairs.
| Your electric utility | Replacement incentive (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| PSE (King County side) | $1,500 upgrade rebate plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost for replacing an out-of-warranty, ducted, all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model (ductless and dual fuel excluded); midstream discount of $300, $400 or $600 on qualifying equipment |
| Snohomish County PUD (Snohomish County side) | The PUD lists heat pump rebates for electrically heated homes ($1,800 ducted conversion, $2,500 inverter-driven). Whether replacing an existing heat pump qualifies is not stated, so ask us and we will check with the PUD for your home. |
R-22 systems can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been made since 2020 (EPA), which makes big repairs on old units harder to justify. We quote the repair first; for comparison, the instant quote gives a replacement range in about 30 seconds, and our heat pump replacement page explains the options.
We pull the required permits for every installation.

In October our technician visited a Bothell dual fuel system, a heat pump paired with a gas furnace, to record the settings the utility rebate requires.
He documented the thermostat's lockout settings: the compressor lockout, or balance point, at 30 degrees and the backup heat outdoor lockout at 35 degrees. Together they decide when the gas furnace takes over from the heat pump. He also photographed the heat pump and furnace nameplates for the rebate file.
Our Redmond team repairs heat pumps in Canyon Park, North Creek, Thrasher's Corner, Norway Hill and Maywood/Beckstrom Hill, on both sides of the county line. Nearby, we also serve Woodinville, Kenmore and Kirkland.
A repair visit has a $119 dispatch (trip) fee plus a $72 standard diagnostic or a $130 deeper diagnostic, and qualifying after-hours emergencies add a $330 after-hours fee. You get a written repair price before any work begins. Angi's Seattle-area range is $220 to $2,220 (May 2026), a benchmark rather than our price.
Heating mode depends on parts cooling never uses, such as the reversing valve and defrost controls, and a small refrigerant leak shows up first in cold weather. A diagnostic finds which.
Mild, lukewarm air is normal for a heat pump. Long stretches of cold air can come from a defrost cycle, thermostat settings, a reversing valve or low refrigerant. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call.
Light frost that clears during defrost is normal. Ice that stays, or a solid block on the coil, suggests a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Leave the ice alone, use emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
Aux heat helps the heat pump in cold weather or during defrost, and EM heat runs only the backup. If AUX runs most of the day in mild weather, or your bill jumps, have it checked.

It depends on the repair, the age and the refrigerant. R-22 units can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been made since 2020. We price the repair and tell you if replacement makes more sense; the instant quote gives a range in about 30 seconds.
Not for repairs. On PSE electricity, replacing an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump with a qualifying cold-climate model can earn $1,500 plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost. On Snohomish PUD electricity, ask us: we check the PUD's current rules for your home (October 2026).
Part-only repairs need no permit. Replacing a heat pump needs a City of Bothell mechanical permit (Snohomish County outside city limits) and an L&I electrical permit; we pull the required permits for every installation.
