Smoke, sparks or a burning smell? Turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker and stay clear of the unit. On a dual fuel system with a gas furnace, if you smell gas, leave the home and call 911 or Cascade Natural Gas at 888-522-1130 from outside.
Many Port Orchard and South Kitsap homes moved from baseboard heat or oil to a heat pump, ducted or ductless. Salt air near Sinclair Inlet and long wet winters are hard on outdoor units. Call us when you see:
| Part | Symptoms it causes |
|---|---|
| Run capacitor | Outdoor unit hums or will not start; a very common failure |
| Contactor | Outdoor unit will not turn on, or will not turn off |
| Defrost board or sensor | Ice that keeps building on the coil |
| Reversing valve | Stuck in cooling, or cool air on HEAT |
| Fan motor | Unit runs hot, trips on overload, ices up |
| Refrigerant leak | Slow loss of heating, long run times, iced lines |
| Ductless head drain and sensors | Water dripping from the wall unit, error codes |
We repair ducted systems, ductless mini-splits and dual fuel setups paired with a gas furnace. We are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and a Lennox Premier Dealer, and we service all major brands.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as no heat in cold weather or a heat pump that has stopped heating.

One failed part on a heat pump with a clean history is usually a repair. A failed compressor or coil, repeat refrigerant leaks, or an R-22 system is the time to price a replacement as well. R-22 units can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been made or imported since 2020 (EPA).

On a late-September evening, a Port Orchard homeowner had no heat and an outdoor heat pump that only hummed. Our on-call technician found a failed dual run capacitor, the part that helps the compressor and fan motor start. He installed a new 70/5 capacitor, then measured the fan motor and compressor amp draw to confirm both were running normally before he left.

We work across Port Orchard, including McCormick Woods, and Port Orchard and nearby Parkwood, Manchester, East Port Orchard and Bethel. Our Bremerton branch also serves Bremerton, Silverdale and Gig Harbor.
Replacing a heat pump inside city limits needs a residential mechanical permit from the City of Port Orchard. Outside city limits, Kitsap County requires a permit for mechanical work except appliance repairs. Electrical permits come from Washington L&I. We pull the required permits for every installation.

A repair visit has a $119 dispatch fee and a $72 standard diagnostic, or $130 for a deeper diagnostic, plus a $330 after-hours fee for qualifying emergencies. You approve the repair price before work begins. Angi's Seattle estimate (May 2026) lists heat pump repairs at $220 to $2,220; that is not our price.
Yes, after hours for qualifying emergencies such as no heat in cold weather or a heat pump that has stopped heating. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours; the after-hours fee is $330.
Heat pump air feels cooler than furnace air, so lukewarm air can be normal. Cool air for long stretches can point to a defrost cycle, thermostat settings, a reversing valve problem or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call.
Light frost that clears during defrost is normal. Ice that stays points to a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip the ice; switch to emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
AUX heat is the backup heat that helps the heat pump in cold weather or during defrost. EM heat runs only the backup. If AUX runs most of the day in mild weather, or your bill jumps, have the system checked.
A humming outdoor unit that will not start often has a failed run capacitor or contactor, and sometimes a seized fan or compressor motor. Turn it off at the breaker to protect the compressor and book a repair.
Yes, all major brands, ducted and ductless. We are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer.
It depends on the repair, the age and the refrigerant. R-22 units can still be serviced, but no new R-22 has been made since 2020. We price the repair, and if replacement makes more sense we say so; replacement estimates are free.
Cascade does not offer a heat pump rebate. If you are a PSE electric customer replacing an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump, PSE's upgrade rebate is $1,500 plus a $2,400 income-based Efficiency Boost, and PSE's instant discount ($300, $400 or $600 by efficiency tier) comes straight off your invoice if the equipment qualifies. Repairs are not rebated.
Yes. Inside city limits the City of Port Orchard issues the residential mechanical permit; outside city limits Kitsap County does. Electrical permits come from WA L&I. A part-only repair needs no permit. We pull the required permits for every installation.
Once a year. Our heat pump tune-up is $230, or $180 for Home Comfort Club members, per piece of equipment.
