Tesla Wall Connector and other Level 2 chargers
Yes, our electricians install Tesla Wall Connectors as well as other Level 2 chargers. A charger is a continuous load, so the circuit must be sized above the charger's own setting, and the charger is then set to match the circuit and what your panel can carry. Many newer Teslas and other EVs use the NACS plug, while others use J1772; adapters work in both directions for most home charging. If two EVs share a garage, we look at whether one circuit can serve both or a second circuit is needed.
Can your Seattle panel handle an EV charger?
Often, yes. We start every install with a load check of your panel and service. Many homes on 100-amp or 200-amp service can add a Level 2 charger sized to what the panel can carry. If yours cannot, the options include a lower charger setting, a smart panel, or a panel or service upgrade. Seattle permits for EV chargers
Every EV charger installation in Seattle needs an electrical permit from the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI). Here is what SDCI's EV charger guidance (Tip 132) says, in plain words:
- A 40-amp Level 2 charger at a single-family home can be permitted online without plan review.
- The person doing the installation gets the permit. A single-family homeowner may do their own work, but SDCI recommends a state-licensed, bonded electrical contractor.
- A new or upgraded service is inspected by SDCI and Seattle City Light.
- Car chargers cannot be placed in the public right-of-way.

Garage, driveway or no off-street parking?
A charger in an attached garage close to the panel is usually the simplest job. Detached garages, which are common behind older Seattle homes, and outdoor driveway spots mean a longer wire run and a charger rated for outdoor use. In a townhouse or on a shared driveway, check HOA or neighbor approval first. If you park on the street, Seattle rules do not allow a private charger in the public right-of-way, so the charger must be on your property; Seattle City Light runs public curbside chargers in some neighborhoods instead.
Seattle City Light rebates and the time-of-use rate
We found no current Seattle City Light rebate for a home charger at a single-family house (checked October 2026); City Light's earlier home charger rebate ended in December 2024. The federal 30C tax credit covered home chargers placed in service through June 30, 2026, and it has ended.
What can lower your cost is when you charge. On City Light's Residential Time of Use rate, off-peak hours are midnight to 6 a.m. every day and peak hours are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Most Level 2 chargers can be scheduled to start after midnight. Updated October 2026.

I don't have a driveway or garage. Can I still get a charger?
