A visit starts with a $119 dispatch fee and a $72 standard or $130 deeper diagnostic, listed separately. Burning smell or sparks at the outdoor unit? Switch the heat pump off at the thermostat and the breaker, and call. In a dual fuel home, if you smell gas, leave the house and call PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or 911 from outside.
More detail in our guide to why a heat pump blows cold air.
Cold air settles on the Snoqualmie Valley floor overnight, so Duvall heat pumps spend a lot of winter mornings in defrost. A short defrost is normal: the outdoor fan stops, the unit briefly reverses, and you may see steam. The backup heat (AUX) covers the gap.
Trouble starts when the defrost control or its sensor fails. The coil can ice over solid, or the board can cycle the system off and on. When the backup electric heat in the air handler also stops working, the house cools quickly. That is exactly the kind of two-part fault we found on a recent Duvall call (below).
If you see a solid block of ice, do not chip at it; the fins and coil damage easily. Switch to emergency heat if your thermostat has it and book a repair.
Ductless heads are a common way to heat a room the original system never reached. We repair indoor heads, outdoor units, drain lines, sensors and communication faults on all major brands. Home Comfort Alliance is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, and we service single-zone and multi-zone systems alike. More on ductless systems.
Duvall is on PSE natural gas, and plenty of homes pair a heat pump with a gas furnace that takes over in the coldest weather. We repair both halves and check the outdoor temperature lockout settings that decide when each one runs. For the furnace side, see furnace repair in Duvall, and our guide to dual fuel heat pumps.
Low roads around Duvall can flood in a wet winter. If floodwater reached your outdoor unit, keep it switched off at the breaker. Water and silt can damage the control board, the fan motor and the electrical connections, and restarting a wet unit can turn a cleaning job into a parts job. Book a visit and we will check it before it runs.
Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather or a burning or electrical smell. Standard visits run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with same-day service when possible.
We publish our fees and list each one separately. After the diagnosis you get the repair price in writing and decide.

A heat pump with a failed board, capacitor, contactor or sensor is usually worth repairing. A failed compressor, a leaking coil on an older unit, or a system that still uses R-22 refrigerant is when a replacement price is worth comparing.
Know this before you plan on rebates: PSE's Duvall Heat Pump Program (up to $8,000) is for homes switching from natural gas heat, and homes that already have a heat pump, including one used only for cooling, are not eligible (PSE Duvall program, read October 2026). If your current ducted, all-electric heat pump is out of its manufacturer's warranty and you replace it with a qualifying cold-climate ducted model, PSE's upgrade rebate is $1,500 plus an income-based Efficiency Boost of up to $2,400. Ductless and dual fuel systems are excluded, and a PSE Trade Ally or REP must do the work (PSE upgrade rebate). Home Comfort Alliance is a PSE Trade Ally, and we handle the rebate paperwork for you.
Replacement estimates are free; our instant HVAC quote gives a range in about 30 seconds. What you get with a replacement: a 3-year Comfort Shield labor warranty on new installations, kept active with yearly maintenance. First-year maintenance is included. See heat pumps in Duvall and our Duvall heat pump program page.
Puget Sound Energy supplies electricity and natural gas in Duvall. Part-only repairs need no permit. Replacing a heat pump inside city limits needs a mechanical permit from the City of Duvall Permit Center, 14525 Main Street NE, 425-788-2779, and the city asks for a pressure test affidavit when refrigerant lines are installed (City of Duvall permitting). Addresses outside city limits go through King County Permitting, 206-296-6600. Electrical permits come from Washington L&I. We pull the required permits for every installation.

In mid October a Duvall homeowner called about a system that was "not kicking on". It turned out to be a heat pump with an electric air handler, five to ten years old.
Our technician found two separate problems. The heat pump was shutting off and on because of a short, most likely on the defrost control board, and the air handler would not run its backup electric heat at all. Two days later he returned with a new defrost board, installed and tested it, and the cycling stopped. He then narrowed the backup heat fault to the fan board, a contactor or the heat strip itself, and ordered the part so only the failed piece would be replaced.

Repair visits carry a $119 dispatch fee. Diagnosis is $72 standard or $130 for a deeper diagnostic, and after-hours visits for qualifying emergencies carry a $330 after-hours fee. Heat pump air feels cooler than furnace air, so lukewarm air can be normal. Cold air for long stretches can point to a defrost cycle, thermostat settings, a reversing valve or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that the thermostat is on HEAT and the filter is clean, then call us.
Frequent cycling can come from a failing defrost control board, an electrical short, a refrigerant problem, a thermostat issue or an oversized system. A technician traces which one with meter readings before replacing anything.
Light frost that clears during defrost is normal. Ice that stays, or a solid block on the coil, suggests a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem. Do not chip the ice; switch to emergency heat if you have it and book a repair.
AUX is backup heat that helps in cold weather or during defrost. EM runs only the backup. If AUX runs most of the day in mild weather, or your bill jumps, have the heat pump checked.
Same-day service when possible. Our phones are answered and bookings are accepted 24/7. Heating and cooling technicians work during business hours and are available after hours for qualifying emergencies ($330 after-hours fee), such as a heat pump that has stopped heating in cold weather.
Yes. We repair ductless and ducted heat pumps from all major brands, and we are a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and a Lennox Premier Dealer.
We do both. Our technicians repair the heat pump and the PSE gas furnace in dual fuel systems and check how they hand off to each other.
Do not run it. Water can damage the electrical parts and controls. Keep it off at the breaker and book a repair visit so a technician can check it first.
No. PSE says homes with an existing heat pump, including one used only for cooling, are not eligible for the Duvall Heat Pump Program (pse.com, October 2026). If you replace an out-of-warranty ducted all-electric heat pump, PSE's upgrade rebate of $1,500 plus an income-based Efficiency Boost of up to $2,400 may apply.
Part-only repairs need no permit. Replacing a heat pump needs a mechanical permit from the City of Duvall, or from King County for addresses outside city limits, plus an L&I electrical permit. We pull the required permits for every installation.
